Kayo Jane Miki, violin

Kayo was born and raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia, a medium sized town on Vancouver Island. At age 9, she began playing the violin after catching the 'music bug' from her mother, who was Concertmaster of the local Symphony Orchestra. During the summer months (age 12-16), she studied abroad at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Holtzhausen Musiktage in Munich, Germany, and the International Music Academy in Trani, Italy. For her two final years of high school she attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan where she was concertmaster during her Senior Year.

Her principal teachers include Charles Castleman, William Preucil, Denes Zsigmondy, and Camilla Wicks. While completing her Bachelor and Master's degree in Violin Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York (1990-96), she participated in the Salzburg Music Festival, Heidelberg Castle Festival, Sapporo Pacific Music Festival and Banff Festival of the Arts. In 1996, she relocated to the Bay Area, where she has been fortunate enough to play with musicians from the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet Orchestras.

In 2003, she was involved in the San Francisco Symphony's 'Adventure's in Music Program II' where her string quartet performed 150 concerts for the entire San Francisco public school district (first-third grades). Ms. Miki has also performed on various movie soundtracks including Spy Kids, The Game, Bicentennial Man and other HBO specials, as well as music for Disney. She has also performed along with famous rock & roll artists and in Broadway shows such as Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme, Phantom of the Opera, Lion King and I love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.

Ms. Miki performs regularly with the New Century Chamber Orchestra, California Symphony and various other chamber music groups in the San Francisco area. When she is not performing or recording, she dedicates some of her time to teaching at West Portal Lutheran School and coaching students of the Golden Gate Philharmonic and enjoys running, cooking, going to beaches, watching old movies and spending time with friends.
