NIDS Essay Competition Winners

NIDS received 46 essays during the first round of the competition. The seven judges agreed that the following essays were the winners (in no particular order):

In addition, there are several highly regarded essays which, although not winners, also deserve to be published here see the Outstanding Essays from the Runners Up page. One of the striking features of the NIDS essay competition was the overall low response from members of the United States scientific community. Approximately two thirds of the essays, many of which were high quality, came from overseas. One goal of the essay contest was to stimulate reasoned debate on the topic of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence among the United States scientific community. We are surprised at the low scientific response to the invitation to dialog. NIDS has therefore decided not to immediately go ahead with a second round of the essay competition, pending further analysis. The three winning essays and selected runners up essays will be published in two forthcoming Exobiology issues of the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society.
