This cross was designed for Sharon Fernandes as part of a tatting exchange at The Official Tatters' Exchange Web Site. It took several attempts to get right and I would suggest that the pattern is in the high intermediate to advanced category as there is some two shuttle tatting with each individual pair of shuttles. However it is lovely when finished and beautifully crisp in this thread. Note that chains are tightened a little before joining just to stabilise them.

  1. Wind two pairs of tatting shuttles, one with Colour A and one with Colour B. In this version of the pattern, Colour A is white, Colour B is the variegated thread.
  2. Colour A SH1
Fold the thread in the middle between the two shuttles, and start by tatting about 2 inches away from this fold so that a small loop is formed that will be big enough to pass the shuttle through. This starts the SCMR. Don't do Lock Stitch, just start tatting normal double stitches, C 5 DS, P, 5 DS, 5 DS, do not RW.
  3. Colour A SH2
    R 5 DS, P, 5 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
  4. Colour A SH1
C 5 DS, pass SH1 through the loop you made at the beginning, draw up to close. RW.

  6. Colour A SH1
C 5 DS, 3 P sep by 5 DS, 5 DS, lay this section to one side.
  7. Pick up the pair wound with Colour B.
  8. Colour B SH1
R 5 DS, pick up the small section made with Colour A and orientate it so that the final C is at the same side as the base of the R you are making, J to the last P of the 2nd Ring which was made with SH2 Colour A, 5 DS, 2 P sep by 5 DS, 5 DS, cl. R, RW.

  36. Continue pattern as set, interweaving chains as necessary. When you get to the last Chain and the final joins to the centre, it is advisable to work part of the longer chain from Colour A, then make the chain from Colour B and finish making sure it is on the correct side of the work (all four Colour B chains should go UNDER the Colour A chains), then finish the Colour A chain and make the final joins to the last P and to the centre. The long arm on the bottom side of the cross should have a total of 6 repeats counting out from the corner.
