FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Bishop Auckland 0 : Pickering Town 1
13 September, 2003
Report from John Cowey - 13 September, 2003
Bishop Auckland crashed out of the FA Cup in humiliating fashion when 'keeper Adrian Swan gifted Pickering's Wood a goal on 14 minutes, and despite pressing throughout the second half, the equaliser was not destined to come.
Team: Swan, Rowe, Foster (Ross 21mins), Salvin, West, Hope, Moore, Maddison, Chandler (Mi Taylor 85mins), Scaife (Batey 75mins), Irvine
The game started in bright sunshine, with the early exchanges equal until a low shot was spilled by Swan and Wood followed in to tap home. Swan survived another scare when he flapped at a cross, but the Pickering forward steered his header wide.
1st Half: Early action in the Bishops half
Pickering quickly reverted to defensive mode, and began the predictable time wasting exercises to break up the flow of the game. Bishops only real chance of the half came when Salvin headed close from a Moore cross.
1st Half: Stuart Irvine controls the ball.
The second half was all Bishops, but Pickering's custodian handled impeccably, and when necessary made two all important saves.
2nd Half: On the attack, but where's the threat ?
Chandler missed the clearest opportunity of the half when he blazed a header way over the bar when clear eight yards out.
With stoppage time running out, Swan ran upfield to join the attack for the final corner, but to no avail. The cup run is over, and reality now starts to bite.
