New Walker Park
When the Guthrie Theater moves to its new Minneapolis riverfront facility in 2006, the Walker Art Center will situate a four-acre park designed by Michel Desvigne on the land now occupied by the Guthrie building. Added to the 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the new green space will enhance the urban landscape, bringing the total garden acreage to 15. The new park will feature tall rustling grasses, small pools of collected rainwater surrounded by herbs and wildflowers, and a grove of birch trees. A newly commission outdoor sculpture by James Turrell, designed for viewing the sky, will be entered through an underground tunnel. For more information, visit expansion.walkerart.org.
