CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS BURIED IN THE CONFEDERATE SECTIONS AND NATIONAL CEMETERY, CAVE HILL CEMETERY, LOUISVILLE, JEFFERSON COUNTY, KENTUCKY
Compiled by Geoffrey R. Walden Sons of Confederate Veterans, Gen. Ben Hardin Helm Camp 1703
The Confederate soldier and veteran lots are located in Section "O" of Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Avenue, Louisville, KY. This listing also contains Confederate soldiers and Southern civilians buried in the Cave Hill National Cemetery. For name searches of this index, use the "Find" or "Search" feature of your browser. Anyone having documented corrections or additions to this listing is invited to contact the compiler at gwalden1864@earthlink.net .
Copies of these listings, with maps showing the locations of the various Confederate sections, are on file in the Cave Hill Cemetery office.
INTRODUCTION
Early in 1862, as Confederate soldiers in the Western Theatre began to be taken as prisoners during the War Between the States, the Federal authorities established a system of military prisons to handle these prisoners of war. Later, many of these prisons were expanded to hold civilian political prisoners and Federal soldiers who had been convicted by court martial.
A military prison was established in Louisville, primarily as a collection and distribution center for prisons further north. Until the Federal forces had moved deep into Tennessee in late 1863, the Louisville prison was considered too near the Confederate lines to serve as a permanent detention center, and it continued to serve only as a half-way point throughout the war. The only prisoners who stayed long in Louisville were those who were too badly wounded or too sick to send further North, along with various Southern civilian political prisoners (although some of these were also transferred).
The military prison was located on Broadway, between Tenth and Eleventh. A facility for female civilian prisoners was established at Broadway and Twelfth (some female prisoners were also kept at Barracks No. 2, a facility for paroled US soldiers on Main between Seventh and Eighth). The sick and wounded prisoners were treated at a prison hospital co-located with the prison buildings (Military Hospital No. 2), or at one of the branches of the Eruptive General Hospital (established to treat cases of contagious diseases).
The first Confederate prisoners seem to have arrived in Louisville shortly after the capture of Fort Donelson in February 1862, and hospital deaths started to mount with the influx of prisoners from the battle of Shiloh in April 1862. The local military authorities did not want the Confederates to be buried with the Federal dead in Cave Hill Cemetery, so Elijah Lyter Huffman and Samuel S. Hamilton, local Southern sympathizers, purchased several lots for the Confederate dead. These became Lots 246- 267 in Section "O." In the early 1890s, Lot 267½ and its adjacent Addition were set aside for burial of Confederate veterans (a few veterans had previously been buried in empty spaces among the wartime burials and at the ends of rows in Lots 246-267).
In spite of the prevailing wish not to bury Confederates in the Federal section, which became the Cave Hill National Cemetery, at least 45 Confederate soldiers and civilian political prisoners are buried in the National Cemetery. These are listed here, and described in detail in Part II.
These listings were compiled from a number of different sources, which are referenced at the end of the lists. There are many discrepancies in the spelling of names, unit assignments, and dates of death between all sources used. I have attempted to note as many variations in the names as possible, particularly where the differences are great. I have assumed the period military rosters (when available) to be the most accurate, and I have shown the names, units, and dates of death as they appear on unit rosters or prisoner lists first, with variations or additions from the grave markers or other listings shown as alternates.
It must be emphasized that the typed listings of the Confederate sections held in the Cave Hill Cemetery office date from the early 1900s, and whatever manuscripts were used to develop them are now apparently lost. Since many of the grave stone markings differ rather greatly from the information on any of the listings, there must have been another source, also apparently lost, used to develop these when the present stone markers replaced the original wooden markers (circa 1880).
In the case of the wartime burials, the DEATH DATE given is usually the actual date of death, taken from the Louisville Military Prison records, the grave markers themselves, and the 1912 POW register. For those veterans who died after the war and are buried in the Confederate lots, with markers that do not show the date of death, the DEATH DATE is actually the date of burial, taken from the typed Cave Hill lists.
Those wishing to locate a particular grave should consult the personnel in the Cave Hill Cemetery office, who can provide maps showing the graves in each lot.

NOTES:
Cave Hill Cemetery records list the burial in CS Lot 267, grave 61, as Mrs. Mary Price, buried 6/15/1892. The grave marker reads M. GRICE, CO. A, 7 ALA, DIED MAR 12, 1864, and this name and unit accords with the 1912 POW listing (although the date of death is different; the name is listed as M. Price in the 1905 Confederate Veteran list). The Cave Hill office name index shows five or six names that could be Mrs. Mary Price, but none of these are buried in the CS lots, nor are their dates near the 1892 date listed. The Cave Hill record that shows Mrs. Price buried in CS Lot 267, grave 61, is therefore in error.
There are two grave markers for Frank H. Griffin, at the same end of adjacent rows in CS Lot 267 (graves 67 and 97). These markers are apparently for the same man, since the date of death is 1890 on both (the west facing marker on grave 67 is nearly illegible, but the 1890 shows).
Elizabeth Timms (CS Lot 263, grave 13) was a civilian from Gordon Co., Georgia, who was arrested in 1864 for refusing to take the oath of allegiance, and brought to Louisville. She was supposedly imprisoned in an icehouse by Dr. Mary Walker, U.S. Army, where she contracted pneumonia and died. The year of death on her grave marker is 1867, but she is believed to have died in 1864 (the soldiers adjacent to her died in October and November 1864). See Confederate Veteran, Vol. 23, No. 10 (October 1915), page 445; Louisville Courier-Journal, June 4, 1954, p. 2-1; Rules and Regulations ... of Cave Hill Cemetery (1868), p. 39; 1860 Gordon Co. Census.
The UNKNOWN buried in CS Lot 263, grave 14, is thought to be Elizabeth Timms' nephew (Rules and Regulations ... of Cave Hill Cemetery (1868), p. 39). The grave stone is unmarked. Likewise, the stone CS Lot 267, grave 66 (listed as UNKNOWN) is unmarked. There is no marker on CS Lot 246, grave 59, which is listed as UNKNOWN in Cave Hill Cemetery records. In 1998 the family of William Hopkins (see below) put up a marker for him on CS Lot 262, grave 101, removing the UNKNOWN marker that was on that grave.
The following names are shown on hospital rolls or the 1912 listing as having died while prisoners in the Louisville Military Prison, but their graves have not been found in Cave Hill Cemetery. Some of these may be the UNKNOWNS.

Some of those listed as Citizens, Civilians, Deserters, or Guerrillas may possibly be Federals, either civilian political prisoners or soldiers who had been convicted by court martial. Some of these were held in the same prison, and treated at the same hospitals, as the Confederate prisoners. However, I have listed them here because they appear in the original prison rolls or the 1912 listing as Southerners. There is a SUSAN MARTIN buried in grave C2995 in the National Cemetery. She has the same type of marker as John Riggins and W. H. McPeak (no shield). There is no date on her marker, but cemetery records show her date of burial to have been 31 December 1864. She may have been a civilian political prisoner.
The DEATH DATE given is sometimes the date of burial, in the case of those veterans who died after the war, whose markers do not always show the date of death.
The units are listed as Company, Regiment, State, and Branch of Service.
The abbreviations used are as follows:
INF = Infantry CAV = Cavalry ARTY = Artillery BN = Battalion REGT = Regiment RIF = Rifles MR = Mounted Rifles PART = Partisan Rangers SCTS = Scouts SSBN = Sharpshooter Battalion VOLS = Volunteers MUS. = Musician F&S = Field & Staff (Headquarters) S.T. = State Troops CS LOT = Confederate Lots in Section O Nat. Cem. = Cave Hill National Cemetery (north of Section O) - Most of the Confederates buried in the National Cemetery are in a row just south of the lake (graves 1R62 - 37R62); others are in Section C of the surrounding area, and in Sections A and B.
