Preparing for nanotechnology
Foresight Institute's goal is to guide emerging technologies to improve the human condition. Foresight focuses its efforts upon nanotechnology, the coming ability to build products—of any size—with atomic precision. Foresight Institute® is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible in the US to the full extent provided by law.

Nobel Winner Smalley Responds to Drexler's Challenge,
Fails to Defend National Nanotech Policy
Rice University Professor Richard Smalley responds to a longstanding challenge by Foresight Chairman Eric Drexler to defend the controversial direction of U.S. policy in nanotechnology. Their four-part exchange was a cover story for Chemical & Engineering News. This could mark a turning point in the development of the field.

Nanofactories will use specialized machinery to mass-produce small parts. Here, a belt carrying molecular tools (moving from left to right, above) meets a belt carrying cylindrical parts. Each tool adds a single atom (shown striped) to a precise location on each part. In later steps, a nanofactory will assemble small parts into larger products using tiny robotic arms that work much like the larger robotic arms in modern factories. |

Center for Responsible Nanotechnology briefing document: "Gray Goo is a Small Issue":
"Replicating assemblers will not be used for manufacturing. Factory designs using integrated nanotechnology will be much more efficient at building products, and a nanofactory is nothing like a gray goo nanobot. A stationary tabletop factory using only preprocessed chemicals would be both safer and easier to build. Like a drill press or a lathe, such a system could not run wild. Systems like this are the basis for responsible molecular manufacturing proposals. To evaluate Eric Drexler's technical ideas on the basis of gray goo is to miss the far more important policy issues created by general-purpose nanoscale manufacturing."
