Portugal's Pedro Proença has been appointed to referee the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final between Spain and Turkey at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland on Saturday.
Assistants and fourth official
The 33-year-old, who has already been in regular action at the U19 final round in Switzerland, will be accompanied by assistant referees Michael Tingey (England) and Fredrik Nilsson (Sweden), with Alon Yefet (Israel) as the fourth official.
"Of course it is a great honour for me, as it is my first big showpiece match," he told uefa.com on Thursday. "It is fantastic and amazing." Proença was a referee liaison officer at UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal, and has plenty of domestic experience as a match official in his country.
"I found out that I had been appointed on Thursday morning at our usual team debriefing. We talked about yesterday's games and then the [UEFA] Referees' Committee announced the appointments for the final," he added. "I was surprised and flattered, as every referee here is capable of taking charge of the final, so it is a real privilege."
"I will prepare as normal with my assistants - we travel to Nyon on Friday and will work closely together. We will study the teams, which is very useful for us. The most important thing, however, is that we enjoy the game, and I'm sure everyone will."
