Because of the community’s response to the Prairie Duneland Trail, the Portage Police Department, in cooperation with the Portage Park Department, created a bicycle patrol which twenty-five regular and reserve officers participate.

Private donations initially provided the funding for the project. The Portage Police Department received a block grant from the United States Justice Department which will fund the Bicycle Patrol throughout 1998.
