The primary function of the National Court Statistics Project (CSP) is to
collect and analyze data relating to the work of our nations state
courts. This requires the ongoing compilation of data from all
50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, as well as gathering
case-level information from trial courts through other special data
collection efforts.
Examining the Work of State
Courts provides a comprehensive analysis of the business of
state trial and appellate courts in a non-technical fashion.
Accurate, objective, and comparable data across states provide a relative
yardstick against which states can consider their performance, identify
emerging trends, and measure the possible impact of legislation.
This volume facilitates a better understanding of the state courts by
making use of closely integrated text and graphics to describe plainly and
succinctly the work of state trial and appellate courts.

A second
volume, State Court Caseload
Statistics, is a basic reference that contains detailed
information and descriptions of state court systems. Individuals
requiring more complete information will find this volume useful.
A third series, Caseload Highlights,
recognizes that informed judges and court managers want comparative
information on a range of policy-relevant topics, but they want it in a
timely fashion and in a condensed readable format. Caseload
Highlights targets specific and significant issues and disseminates the
findings in short reports.
We are pleased to introduce the State
Court Guide to Statistical Reporting, to the state court
community. Replacing the State Court Model Statistical
Dictionary, 1989, the Guide is the result of a
collaboration between the Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA),
trial court administrators, state and trial court statisticians, and other
experts from throughout the court and academic communities. The Guide
contains equivalent sections for each of the six major case
categories: Civil, Domestic Relations, Criminal, Juvenile, Traffic,
and Appellate.
