  SHOSTAKOVICH: COMPLETE CONCERTOS [VARIOUS ARTISTS]
SHOSTAKOVICH: COMPLETE CONCERTOS [Various artists] This is another in the excellent series of Universal Trios that offer three CDs at a very affordable price.

IMOGEN COOPER AND FRIENDS [VARIOUS ARTISTS]
This three CD set is a marvellous collection of music.

ARIAS DE ZARZUELA BARROCA [MARIA BAYO]
Flash forward a few decades to the present and we have my favourite of the moment: the Spanish soprano Maria Bayo.

  CLASSIC RECITALS SERIES [VARIOUS ARTISTS]
These discs are worth buying just for the camp retro cover art – each CD features the original LP artwork and liner notes.

  DISTANT LAND [JOHN RUTTER]
DISTANT LAND [John Rutter] This new collection of orchestral music from English composer John Rutter is a potpourri of gorgeousness.

HANDEL: SAUL [PAUL MC CREESH, ANDREAS SCHOLL]
This is one of Handel’s great works but one he apparently struggled with for many months.

  FRENCH TOUCH [PATRICIA PETIBON]
This too is an unusual and delightful CD but in a very different way.

  THE JERUSALEM QUARTET
The Jerusalem Quartet is one of the most remarkable of the new crop of excellent young string quartets.

  DVORAK: CELLO CONCERTO [MISCHA MAISKY]
DVORAK: CELLO CONCERTO [Mischa Maisky] When Brahms first heard Dvorak’s cello concerto he supposedly said: “Why on earth didn’t I know one could write a cello concerto like this? If I’d only known, I’d have written one long ago.

  HAYDN: CELLO CONCERTOS [GAUTIER CAPUÇON]
This brilliant recording has deservedly garnered a swag of European awards.

  BERLIOZ: SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE
BERLIOZ: SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE [Valery Gergiev & the Vienna Philharmonic] This combination of French composer, Viennese orchestra and Russian conductor couldn’t be more perfect.

  SEVEN LAST WORDS
Seven last words is a traditional format for musical composition probably made most famous by Haydn’s orchestral work, which is also popular in its string quartet and piano versions.
