Tokyo Wars W.I.P. update
>> Tokyo Wars is a homebrew tank game in an urban environment currently in development by Team AfterShock. From shizno on aftershock.xbox-scene.com:
I have been busy this week playing on xbox live, but I did get a bit done.... which are:
1: Bullet to Tank collision detection....
2: Smoke particle effects for damaged tanks
3: Cloth 'physics' for SCENERY flags (poles), even though its not physics, just a sine wave running through the vertex buffer making it look like the flag is waving in wind... for the actual flag for the gametype Capture the Flag, I might use actual physics like HALO but thats still up in the air.
4: There is a poll on the site now for what the game should be called, either Tokyo Wars, Apocalypse (something here) or Other.
5: Decided I might shrink the level yet again, and turn the game into a fast, party game (because I think it would be a better overall game this way, instead of boring tank sim crap)... but that's not 100% certain yet....

Here is a screenshot of two tanks testing out the new collision and flag physics, USA and New Zealand flags.

OzXodus: Partnership dissolved, TeamXodus and OzXChip Split
>> From OzXodus.com:
It is with regret and great sadness that we announce our decision to dissolve the partnership formed between OzXChip and TeamXodus. In any business arrangement and partnership, alliances are made and formed for the betterment of the two parties with the express purpose of producing better quality products and service to customers. The birth of the first 4th generation chip, the Xenium, was a major achievement of which we are extremely proud.

In recent times we have found that too much time has been spent negotiating plans, arguing over proposed developments and reconciling differences in opinion, as such we feel that the project has suffered and that we have reached an impass. We believe that the alliance has outlived its usefulness and rather than benefiting our customers it is now severely hampering our ability to move quickly and efficiently toward betterment of the product.

We realise that there will be much speculation as to the fate of the Xenium. We would like to assure you that the Xenium is alive and well and that the whole purpose of this decision is to move forward to fulfil the promises made for the product.

Both groups would like to thank the community for the support and encouragement that has been offered to OzXodus.

A Special Message from Team Xodus:
Contrary to speculation and hopeful thinking by critics and competitors, we would like to let you know that Team Xodus, is 100% committed and dedicated to the betterment and development of our premier product, the Xenium. We would like to assure all those sceptics out there that we have absolutely no intention of slowing down or relaxing in any way whatsoever. On the contrary, we are now more focused and determined and would like to invite all of you to visit us at our new domain TeamXodus where you will be able to find out more. See you there!
In conclusion we would like to thank OzXChip and wish them the all the best in their future. You can visit them at www.OzXChip.com
*UPDATE1* From teamxodus.com:
Welcome to our new site. We would like to tell all our critics and faithful supporters alike that we are back, stronger and more united than ever before!
Of course, we realise that we have taken quite a beating over the past few weeks due to our silence and our inability to explain exactly what was going on during our negotiations but it is not in our nature to compromise our integrity and respect for partners no matter the consequences. We appreciate that there have been some serious consequences and we would like to take this opportunity to apologise to loyal customers and supporters alike (especially the Australian market) for delays in supply and lack of timeous response to your requests and questions. We hope that this brief explanation at least goes some way toward enlightening you on the reasons for our recent silence.
Enough of that.
What is more important now is where we are going and what plans we have for the Xenium and other projects already in the pipeline. Now that we have found our voice again you can be sure that information and updates will be flowing more frequently, especially concerning new developments like XOS 2.0, ACT2 which is better and deadlier than before, as well as some exciting new product developments we have in store for you. Naturally, it is now quite clear as to why the much awaited XOS 2.O release has been delayed and why we could not fully explain to disgruntled fans. The good news though, is that the final release of XOS 2.0 will be out straight after current tests are complete with fixes and improvements on our initial beta version, such as the implementation of Quick Boot, date/time bug fix and (hopefully if we can get it stable enough), a small surprise! Due to popular opinion, the backdrop has also been changed to a more sedate scheme.
Our support channel on Efnet, #TeamXodus is up and running. Please join us there.
As far as our competition is concerned, we are sure that their short lived sighs of relief have now turned to gasps of horror and panic as it will soon become painfully obvious that Xenium and TeamXodus are not only here to stay but that we are more determined, positive and confident. If certain products of theirs ever get off their wish lists and finally join us in the real world, they will have a whole lot to live up to, we promise that!!

swfx and swfxplayer 0.1
>> From nfo/readme/website:
This is a decoding library for Macromedia Flash(tm) animations, compiled for use with homebrew applications compiled with the XDK.
Due to the number of requests for Flash support in LinksBoks(info), I've decided to experiment a bit on this library and here's the result.
Integration into LinksBoks will be done in due time (this is no easy task). Meanwhile, I hope it will give some cool ideas to the dashboards/media players authors out there.
Concerning LinksBoks, I'm currently working on a major code rewrite on the Xbox part, which will lead to the possibility of integrating it into applications (I'm thinking about XBMC or dashboards). Will be out "when it's done" (but it won't take too long, I promise :).

How well does swfx/swfxplayer work?
The original library could play any file in the Flash 4 format and below. Tomas Groth included support for compressed SWF files so that Flash 6/7 files are supposed to work. However, there's a lot of remaining limitations:
- No sound on Xbox! Because there's quite a lot of work to do, and it doesn't work so well in Linux too; no compressed (MP3...) support. But it will happen one day, I hope.
- No videos.
- Problems with semi-transparent JPEG files (visible in the Happy Tree Friends, for example ;)
- No text boxes, etc.
- No real-time downloading support or socket access (as far as I know).
- Graphic glitches and performance issues here and there.
- Probably a lot more...
But a lot of animations do work very well, if not perfect.

Best Buy sued for 'ripping off' consumers
>> Not quite Xbox News, but of interest to alot of our readers... www.theregister.co.uk reports...
By John Leyden
Giant US electronics retailer Best Buy has been sued by the State of Ohio over alleged unfair and deceptive business practices.

Ohio's legal officers are acting on complaints that the electronics chain sold used products as new. The retail giant also allegedly failed to honour rebates, exchange programs or extended service contracts on numerous occasions. In a statement issued yesterday, Ohio said it initiated legal action after receiving hundreds of consumer complaints over the last few years.
"The sheer number of complaints coupled with the types of allegations my office received prompted us to file this lawsuit." said Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro. "The primary objective of this lawsuit is to bring Best Buy into conformity with Ohio’s consumer protection laws and ensure that Best Buy’s Ohio customers receive the service they deserve."
In the complaint, Petro asks the court to order Best Buy to comply with Ohio's consumer protection laws, reimburse customers who lost money and pay a civil penalty of $25,000 for each violation of Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act. Best Buy, which operates approximately 750 stores in the US and Canada, said it was aware of the suit but declined to discuss pending litigation.

Internal Xbox sports team axed
>> From GameSpot.com:
In an apparent concession to the strength of EA Sports’ muscle, Microsoft has permanently benched much of its internal sports-game studio. In news first released to the local Seattle press, Microsoft has confirmed that 76 employees previously attached to the NFL Fever, NHL Rivals, and Inside Drive teams are to be terminated.

In a statement, the company said, "As the Xbox business has grown, a vibrant ecosystem of third-party developers has emerged. These developers are filling the title pipeline with an abundance of great games across many genres… The emergence of this healthy developer ecosystem also means that Microsoft Game Studios can evolve its mission."
The company said further that it will now "focus on creating epic, platform-defining games like Fable, Forza Motorsport, and Halo 2."

XBCD v1.01
>> A new version of XBCD(info) - XBox Controller Driver for Windows 98/2000/XP - has been released. What's new/fixed (v1.00):
* I would just like to give credit to Mez for all of his time and help in programming this version of the driver.
* This driver has a version of 1.00 because of all the changes in it and because I don't see it getting much better than this.
* Exports ~32 controls to Windows:
-24 digital buttons.
-7 axes(X, Y, Z, RX, RY, RZ, Slider) in Windows 2000/XP.
-6 axes(X, Y, Z, RX, RZ, Slider) in 98/ME.
-POV hat switch with 8 directions
* Controller buttons, axes, and the digital pad can be mapped to any of the controls exported to Windows.
* Supports up to 8 different configurations. The active configuration can be selected by pressing both Analog Sticks simultaneously.
* Threshold settings for Buttons, Triggers, and Axes.
* Deadzone settings for Analog Sticks.
* Scaling of axes for sensitivity.
* Gamepad settings can be saved to a file for later use.
* Rumble support. Adjustable maximum force for each actuator.
* Some bugs in the previous version have been fixed.
* The installer now offers an option of installing the driver's Rumble support.

v1.01 is a bugfix released for v1.00. What's new/fixed:
* Fixed a problem in the setup utility where some of the input boxes for the axis scales weren't in the right order.
* Added the ability to turn off all axes except X and Y. For Need for Speed Underground, the controller won't be recognized unless the RZ axis is turned off.
* I also forgot to mention that this driver should work with a DDR pad; that means you don't need to download a separate driver for it.

New use for movie theaters: Halo tournaments
>> From engadget.com:
If Internet piracy ends ruining the film industry at least they’ll be able to put all those empty movie theaters to good use: a theater in Logan, Utah set up video projectors in four theaters, hooked each one up to an Xbox and is now holding a weekly giant-screen Halo tournament every Friday night at midnight. They’re even charging teams $60 to play and spectators three bucks a pop just to watch.

Q and A: Microsoft's Peter Moore
>> GameSpot did an interesting interview during the Canadian X04 with Peter Moore, VP of sales and marketing for Xbox International at Microsoft. Here's a short extract:
GS: Are there any decisions you wish you could make over again?
PM: Yes, but I’m not going to tell you! [Laughs]. As you know, this industry is a fast-paced industry, and we make decisions whether to maintain content or kill content, whether to do marketing campaigns or not do campaigns, and how to do them. So you’re making 20 to 30 decisions a day. Therefore, they’re not all correct. But you’ve got to make them. And I've got to say that it is incredibly motivating to work for a company like Microsoft that is not afraid of making large investments very quickly. All the way to the top, from both Bill [Gates] and Steve Ballmer, [both men] are very engaged in the Xbox business. I was with Bill yesterday talking about where we’re at and where we’re going in the future, and he is incredibly enthused. He can’t wait to play Halo 2!

GS: For the record, has Microsoft made an attempt to acquire BioWare? That seemed to be part of the pre-E3 buzz this year.
PM: If we did, I’m not going to tell you [laughs]. We have a great relationship with BioWare, so let’s leave it at that.

GS: Lastly, Xbox Next. What’s the word?
PM: We won’t be beaten to market by our competition. That’s about all I can say right now. The Xbox, right now, is doing so well, and there are a lot of legs in Xbox before we need to worry about the next gen.

(Europe) Xbox drops to 149.99 EUR *update*
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Microsoft has now officially confirmed that the price point of the Xbox in Europe will be 149.99 Euro, with a UK price of UKP 99.99. "With the strongest Christmas games portfolio of any console, Xbox is now also the best value console on the market," commented Xbox EMEA regional VP Eduardo Rosini. "It's a winning combination for gamers this Christmas, and even more people in Europe will discover why it's good to play together with Xbox."
The PlayStation 2 is also set for European price cuts in the coming days, with Sony to cut its price to UKP 104.99 (EUR ~155) this week.

Retailers will hope to see a significant sales boost for both consoles from the price cuts, much as was experienced by US retail back in June when Microsoft, and then Sony, slashed the price of their consoles within the space of a month of each other.
In the UK, the PS2 has continued to outsell the Xbox by a factor of between 2:1 and 2.8:1 over the course of the summer, with the Xbox shifting around 5,000 units per week while the PS2 hovered between 8,000 and 14,000 units.
*update* For those waiting for this price drop, it's expected to happen on the 27th of August.

More X2.6 and X3 news from Team Xecuter
>> From teamxecuter.com:
Quick update for news watchers:
* Finished porting our final X3 code to Actel. Spent a sleepless night in our workshop testing the crap out of it and everything is looking great except for one bug which we are trying to nail. Apart from this we are pretty much go for production - we may miss our deadline by a couple of days - we'll know more by Friday and will keep you posted as usual.
* Added support for nghtshd's XBpartition tool to X3 by request. Now can be toggled in X3 Config live if you wish to read the partition tables from HDD as opposed to the set bios versions.
* We will be releasing a new X2 bios for our loyal X2 customers as soon as we've finished X3 work. This will support v1.6, XBTool & XBpartition.
* After scouring the forums we have taken the advice of various users and made some changes to the X2.6 PCB. Some components and connectors have been shifted around to give a more optimum design.
* Added HDD & LAN LED to X2.6 - HDD/LAN/D0 connector same as X3 for easey future upgrade.
* Updated the X2 programmer. Its a lot smaller and leaner. Tested on 2.3B and 2.6 using WinXP, Win2K, WinmE, Win98SE, Win95 with X2 Bios manager v2.2. Also working on adding support to this programmer to be able to flash the X3 also - not tested yet, we will let you know.
* We will be supplying the no solder reset / eject plug that will be used on X3 for the MS kernel functions and also for the Infra Red Mod addon - free of charge with every X3 supplied.
* FlashBIOS v2.6.0 has gone gold. We have made some changes since the beta version we released last week. This will come pre flashed to the X2.6
* FlashBIOS v3.0.0 is now in development for X3. A basic version will be supplied with X3, however we plan on adding a whole suite of linux features to this bios in the near future thanks to our new member who is quite proficent in linux.

We are working hard day and night to finish this project - as well as working on many other projects which you will benefit from in the near future. We'll post more updates as and when necessary.
