10th FINA World Championships –Barcelona 2003
A total of 570 doping control tests were carried out at the occasion of the 10th FINA World Championships, in Barcelona. Please find below the detail of these tests:

FINA Programme: Conventional urine tests: 312
Combined urine/blood tests: 114
Urine for detection of EPO: 64

During the 10th FINA World Championships 233 athletes from 47 nationalities were tested making a total of 490 tests (including second samples). The distribution per discipline is as follows:

The World Anti-Doping Agency, in cooperation with FINA, conducted 80 Out-of competition tests three days before the start of the competition.

Doping cases in Barcelona
The FINA Doping Panel has decided after the hearing held on July 19, 2003 to sanction with a STRONG WARNING the water polo player Andrey Shevtsov from the Canadian men’s team who tested positive for the presence of the main metabolite of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the active drug of cannabis preparations. The doping control test was carried out on July 14, 2003 at the occasion of the match played between Canada and Romania in the men’s water polo tournament.

Ms. Natalya Khudyakova has been suspended for two years by the FINA Doping Panel after a positive doping control test to Stanozolol.
