Montgomery
County was the 18th County
formed in Georgia, and was created in 1793 from part of Washington
County. The County was named for Revolutionary General Richard
Montgomery who was mortally wounded at the Siege of Quebec. The County
has six municipalities: Ailey, Alston, Higgston, Mount Vernon, Tarrytown
and Uvalda. Mount Vernon is the largest, and is also the county seat. In
1907, an imposing, two-story brick courthouse was built to replace a
wooden structure courthouse built in 1813. Through a two million dollar restoration, citizens
have seen their 1907 courthouse restored to its original beauty. This
renovation created a functional courthouse while maintaining the
historical nature of the building. The courthouse was placed on the
National Register of Historic Sites in 1981. |
