My search for my family roots have come to a stop with my 3x Gt Gnd Parents JOSEPH & MARY SHIRLEY. On the 25 Aug 1814 a Joseph Shirley a widower married a Mary Cox at Christchurch Greyfriars London, and subsequently to this event a Joseph & Mary Shirley living in Portugue Street Westminster just off the Aldwych, had the first of there 7 children baptised at St Clement Danes in the Strand, 10 Nov 1816 and that was my Great Great Grand Father JOSEPH EUGENE SHIRLEY.
He became a Organist, and Professor of Music. His siblings were;
Thomas Fredrick born abt 1819 (may have died in infancy).
Thomas Fredrick born abt 1821 who died at sea 27 Jun 1849.
Emma Shirley bapt’ 23 Apr 1825 St Matthew’s Brixton Surrey.
Matilda Shirley bapt’ 23 Jun 1825 St Matthew’s Brixton Surrey.
Harriett Shirley bapt’30 May 1827 St Matthew’s Brixton Surrey.
William Charles Shirley 05 Oct 1834 St Matthew’s Brixton Surrey.
Earliest Census reference to this family is 1871 in Ellesmere Street Bow.
I am seeking to prove or otherwise a connection to the Greyfriar’s marriage, in addition I have a copy of an extensive Shirley tree going back to "1066 and all that" and wish to see if I have a connection to it.
With the help of my cousin Michael Shirley, and others, I have been able to trace my ancestors migration across the Thames to Lambeth, Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, an back across the river to Stepney Bow and East Ham.
