Asia still dominating

ATHENS, 29 August - The Olympic Taekwondo Tournament of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games began on Thursday 26 August and concluded tonight, with Asian countries still dominating the sport.

The first day featured the Women's Under 49kg competition and the Men's Under 58kg competition.

In the Women's Under 49kg, Chinese Taipei's CHEN Shih Hsin left the Sports Pavilion with the gold medal around her neck. She defeated Cuban Yanelis Yuliet LABRADA DIAZ, 5-4, in the gold medal bout.

Thailand's Yaowapa BOORAPOLCHI, defeated Colombia's Gladys Alicia MORA ROMERO in the last repechage round. She beat her 2-1 and gained the bronze medal for herself and her country.

The Men's Under 58kg category featured high-class athletes fighting through the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals before the medal matches.

Mu Yen CHU (TPE) defeated Mexico's Oscar Francisco SALAZAR BLANCO, 5-1, to take home another gold medal.

The bronze medal went to the man who beat the Sydney 2000 gold medallist, MOUROUTSOS (GRE), Egypt's Tamer BAYPUMI. He defeated Juan RAMOS (ESP) 7-1.

The second day of competition in the Women's Under 57kg category finished with JANG Ji Won (KOR) taking the gold. She defeated USA's Nia ABDALLAH 2-1. JANG played wisely throughout the tournament, striking her opponents at the right time.

Iridia SALAZAR BLANCO (MEX) defeated Sonia REYES (ESP) 2-1,to get the bronze.

The Men's competition finished with what Hadi SAEI BONEHKOHAL originally started in Sydney 2000. SAEI BONEHKOHAL originally won the bronze in the Sydney Olympic Games and on Friday he won the gold defeating HUANG Chih Hsiung (TPE), 4-3.

Korea's SONG Myeong Seob (KOR) won the bronze medal after he defeated a worthy Diogo SILVA (BRA) 12–7.

The Women's Under 67 category of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games started at 9:00 Saturday, 28 August, and featured many surprises such as a 16-year-old competitor.

The Women's tournament was full of surprises but those who prevailed in the end were LUO Wei (CHN) and Elisavet MYSTAKIDOU (GRE). Despite a home crowd MYSTAKIDOU couldn’t beat LUO, losing 7-6 (see photo with the three medallists on the podium).

The bronze medal went to HWANG Kyung Sun (KOR) who beat Heidy JUAREZ (GUA) 5-2. HWANG lost to LUO in the preliminary round, but had a bye in the first round of the repechage. She then beat Mary Antoinette RIVERO (PHI) in the second round and finally beat JUAREZ in the bronze medal contest.

The Men's Under 80kg was a category full of difficult matches and antagonism. Steven LOPEZ (USA) managed to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals with his win over Bahri TANRIKULU (TUR) 3-0 to retain his title as Olympic champion.

Yossef KARAMI (IRI) won the bronze medal. He was defeated by LOPEZ in the semifinal. KARAMI fought against Rashad AHMADOV (AZE) in a match that was very close until the last minute (8-8). At that point KARAMI blocked his opponent's kick and retaliated using a roundhouse kick, which evidently landed on AHMADOV's trunk, with a final score of 9-8.

The Women's Over 67kg category finished with CHEN Zhong (CHN) taking the gold. She defeated Myriam BAVEREL (FRA) 12–5. CHEN clearly dominated the match scoring one point in the first round, four in the second round and six in the last.

The bronze was awarded to Adriana CARMONA (VEN) who defeated Natalia SILVA 7-4.

The Men's Over 80kg ended with MOON Dae Sung (KOR) winning the gold medal. He defeated Alexandros NIKOLAIDIS (GRE) with a knock out. NIKOLAIDIS tried to attack MOON at the 2:10 minute mark but MOON, a very experienced athlete, hit NIKOLAIDI with a spinning hook kick to the head.

The match ended and both men celebrated their victory together in the name of the Olympic Spirit.

The bronze medal went to Pascal GENTIL (FRA). He defeated Ibrahim KAMAL (JOR) 6-2.  The match finished fairly easy for GENTIL but KAMAL couldn't stand the defeat. He fell to his knees and wept. GENTIL celebrated his victory with KAMAL and showed us what is the true paradigm of an athlete.
