So what is this 'geocaching' thing anyway?
Simply put, geocaching is treasure hunting for the 21st century. Armed with a GPS receiver, a set of coordinates that tell you the location of a cache, and a healthy sense of adventure, players go out and look for caches of goodies... (Read more...)

9 June 2003: Internet-Guided Offline Recreation (IGOR): Geocaching (TidBITS)
Sitting at a glowing screen for hours on end, with little or no live human interaction - this is the typical Internet experience. But some areas of the Internet compel users to leave the keyboard, go outside, and interact with the real world. This category of Web sites, hugely popular and usually non-commercial, doesn't have a name yet... (Read more...)

Will they kick him out? (Read more...)

April 2003: There's a new game in town: EcoScavenging (ecoscavenger.com)
EcoScavenging is a new alternative to Letterboxing and GeoCaching. It's played the same way except the "destination is the cache", meaning there's nothing to hide. This is a great way to share interesting and beautiful places. (Read more...)

February 2003: Buxley's Geocaching Waypoint featured in Discover Magazine (Discover Magazine)
The February issue of Discover Magazine's "Emerging Technology" column, written by Steven Johnson, has a very interesting article on future uses of GPS. Not only is geocaching (and this web site) prominently mentioned, he also goes on to mention future uses of GPS technology. For example: what if you could get a message (email, voice, etc.) when you went to a certain latitude and longitude? It's a very highly recommended article which you can read online by clicking here: (Read more...)

With the completion of the map of Vietnam, this web site now has maps for every country in the world containing eight or more geocaches. Another way to look at this is that each of the top fifty countries, in terms of the number of geocaches they contain, now have their own maps. (Read more...)

9 November 2002: Buxley's Geocaching Waypoint Announces New US Maps (Buxley's Geocaching Waypoint)
I'm very pleased to announce the addition of 925 (yes, 925!) new geocaching maps covering the entire continental United States in one degree increments. Each of these "tile" maps covers approximately 3,600 square miles--that's big enough so that eight pixels on one of these maps represents a distance of about a mile.... (Read more...)

17 May 2002: Geocaching discussed on Minnesota Public Radio's The Savvy Traveler (The Savvy Traveler)
It started out as a travel game for gadget geeks. The gadget, in this case, is GPS, or Global Positioning System. Using several satellites, GPS allows you to pinpoint your location to within a few feet. When the government gave civilians access to the technology, some folks made a sport of it. A high-tech treasure hunt called Geocaching. Correspondent Jeff Tyler has this peek into a growing subculture... (Read more... or Listen in RealAudio...)

26 April 2002:High-tech treasure hunt gaining fans (El Paso Times)
Once known for chaining people to their computers for countless hours, modern technology and the insidious Internet are breaking their shackles and turning people loose for a new and exciting outdoor adventure: A treasure hunt for the 21st century. Thousands of people around the world, including a handful of El Pasoans, have discovered "geocaching," an activity so new, nobody is sure whether to call it a hobby, game or sport.... (Read more...)

6 April 2002:Hide-and-seek goes high-tech (Erie Times-News)
Steven Przybyszewki wasn't looking for sun and surf on a Florida beach during his family's recent vacation. He was looking for a hidden cache of toys — using satellites. A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver guided Steven, who led his father Robert, mother Darlene and 6-year-old sister Elaine to the cache, a small container that contained a number of trinkets. Steven took a trinket, and left one in return. Later the family logged the discovery on a Web site.... (Read more...)

19 March 2002: Pinpoint GPS Spawns A Global Treasure Hunt (Wall Street Journal)
Geocaching, the international pastime that got its start in a bucket hidden in the woods here, has reached (at last count) 111 countries. There were a mere 105 countries involved when I went cache hunting for the first time on a recent Saturday morning, but things happen fast in geocaching, which is what you'd expect from a sport based on satellites and the Internet.... 11 March 2002: US National Park Service issues morning report regarding "Geocaching Incident" (National Park Service)
Rangers recently conducted an investigation into geocaching in the park. Geocaching is a sport in which individuals or organizations cache materials at particular locations, then provide the GPS coordinates via the Internet so that other people can attempt to find them. Some times caching entails digging, which presents obvious problems in national parks. [The report incorrectly talks about caches being buried in parks which, of course, is always discouraged. -Ed.] (Read more...)

7 March 2002: Groundspeak announces "Charter Membership" program (Groundspeak)
The Groundspeak company, owners of the geocaching.com website, today announced a subscription program for its users. For a $30 a year (or $3 a month) fee, members can hide and find "Member only" caches. Discussion on the Groundspeak forums has been brisk, to say the least.... (Read more...)

27 January 2002: On a high-tech scavenger hunt -- Searchers make the globe their game board with GPS receivers (The Dallas Morning News)
A century ago, exploration was defined by specific goals and clear destinations. The world's highest mountains had not been climbed. No one had stood at either pole. The moon seemed unreachable.
With those achievements behind us, this century brings a novel idea: Turn any place on Earth, even a randomly chosen spot, into a worthy destination. The object is getting there, wherever "there" might be, by whatever means are necessary.... (Read more...)

25 January 2002: Geocaching by Brian Cheyne (BMW Motorrad [South Africa])
It's all the club's fault. You see, when the BMW club of Pretoria put on an excellent presentation on GPS, I realized that there were other people with more toys than me. And that, frankly, had to be rectified. So off I went into the weird and wonderful world of GPS with a brand new dictionary of jargon that goes with it.
It goes further back than that, though. I once got hopelessly lost in Magoebaskloof... (Read more...)

25 January 2002: Geocaching featured again on TechTV's "Call For Help" (TechTV | Call For Help)
I guess the good folks over at TechTV's "Call for Help" show didn't think that once was enough -- Buxley (known as Ed Hall when not logging caches or making maps) appeared again on TechTV's "Call For Help" program today. As with last August's appearance, the segment ran about seven minutes and covered the basics of geocaching: what a GPS is, how it works, how to go about finding a cache and what to do once you find one. To get into the spirit of the story, the "Call For Help" team even hid another cache in the San Francisco area. (Read more...)

3 January 2002: The 'Caching' Hunt Is On (iKnowRochester [New York])
It's a treasure hunt, but don't let the "treasure" part mislead you--it's the "hunt" that counts when you go geocaching. This new hobby didn't exist a few years ago, but now it's gaining in popularity every day--around Rochester and around the world.... (Read more...)

18 November 2001: High-tech treasure hunt gets computer buffs out in the woods (Rutland Herald [Vermont])
I went on a treasure hunt. But instead of following a map with "x" marking the spot, my companions consulted newfangled gadgets. Our recent trek to Little Rock Pond was my initiation into a technocult activity called geocaching, a term that comes from the Greek word for earth and the French word that means concealment. People hide stashes, often in remote areas, and list the longitude and latitude on the Internet so others can search for them using hand-held Global Positioning System receivers. The two-year-old craze swept the nation after... (Read more...)

7 November 2001: Geocaching is catching on nationwide as an adults' version of a treasure hunt (Omaha World-Herald)
In August, Omaha resident Jeff Dasenbrock returned home from work, his head full of steam and a foggy idea. Dasenbrock had just heard about this new adventure called geocaching. In geocaching, Dasenbrock breathlessly told his wife, people hide boxes in fields. Then other people use Global Positioning System receivers to find those boxes. And gee, honey, he asked, doesn't that sound like a blast? "At first, I thought, 'Oh, no... (Read more...)
