Geocache Description:

Fernwood Botanical Gardens and Nature Preserve

Niles, MI - Rangeline Rd. Take US 31 (between Benton Harbor and South Bend) to Michigan Exit 7 Walden Road. Follow signs.
Event Cache and Classroom hours:

October 16, 2004: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

October 17, 2004: Noon to 5:00 pm

You will have 1 hour before Fernwood is closed for the day to finish locating regular caches.


Special Note:
This event is designed for cachers to come and go anytime during either day. You don't have to attend the workshops if they don't interest you. There will be lots of other activities going on at Fernwood during this time you are welcome to participate in as well.
All of the caches on the grounds and the event caches should take 2-3 hours to complete.

The coordinates above are for the Mary Plym Visitor Center Entrance.

Normal Fernwood fees apply (see below) and no additional geocaching event fees will be charged. Everyone must enter and pay entry fee at the Visitor Center front desk.

Geocaching workshops and event information will be located in the Clark Classroom in the Visitor Center. This event is being held during Fernwood’s Fall Festival, besides Geocaching there will be numerous other activities you can participate in as well.

Bring a picnic lunch to eat on the grounds or Fernwood’s Café will also be open from Noon-3pm both days.
No Smoking / No Pets are allowed on the grounds.

Workshops are especially designed for newcomers to Geocaching and even those of you who haven't tried the sport. A limited number of GPS's will be available as loaners.

General Event Activities:

  1. There will be approximately 10 regular geocaching.com listed caches. (Click Nearby Caches to see others) All caches will be accessible with your feet on the trail. NO BUSHWHACKING is needed at all unless stated on cache site.
    • Caches will be of various varieties
    • A listing of coordinates and cache types will be available the day of the event. as well as on geocaching.com.
    • Some trails will have a terrain rating of 2-3. Come prepared to hike possibly muddy trail sections.
  2. 1 event multi-cache will be placed, that will be completely wheelchair accessible. See below for trading items with for this cache. Must be completed before 5:00 pm.
  3. 1 Kids-Only multi-cache will be placed as well – with Kids-Only prizes awarded. Open only to kids 10 and under. Must be completed by 5:00 pm.
  4. Start your own Travel Bug - a limited number of TB tags will be available for purchase ($5 ea.). You must preregister and e-mail MaxB on the River for additional instructions.
  5. Travel Bug swapping must be completed by 5:00 pm.

Event Multi-cache rules:

This cache has each team bring 1 nice (instead of door prizes) trading item to place in the event cache container. You will receive the event cache information at the geocaching booth. During your hunt of the multi-cache you will be provided with the final cache coordinates and entry code. Your door prize for the day is your choice of 1 of the trading items per team from this cache. It will be stocked with a limited supply of goodies for Saturday morning.
