During the Ancient Regime, the Saint Adrian Abbey in Geraardsbergen held the patronage of the Saint John's Church (Sint-Janskerk)
in Hemelveerdegem (now part of the Town of Lierde, Belgium). The construction of the choir dates back to 1390-1410.
The transept was added around 1550-60 or shortly after the 16th century iconoclastic fury.
