SCIOTO COUNTY AND ITS NEIGHBORS

Scioto County was created in 1803, soon after Ohio received statehood. Portsmouth, the county seat of Scioto County, is located at the confluence of the Scioto River and the Ohio River, 90 miles (145 km) south of Columbus, Ohio's capital. Portsmouth was settled in 1803, incorporated as a city in 1814, and granted a charter in 1815; however, many of its earliest settlers predate its incorporation by several decades.

Scioto's neighbors are

  • Adams County to the west,
  • Pike County to the north,
  • Jackson County to the northeast, and
  • Lawrence County to the east.

Across the Ohio River, which is Scioto County's southern border, are Lewis and Greenup Counties in the
    Commonwealth of Kentucky.
