According to Cecily Shirley, a couple years before her death, this is more of the family story:
Her father, Harry Shirley, worked "passage" on a ship and "jumped ship" in New York.
Harry had three brothers to her knowlege: Lester who died young, she said that he was "tetched in the head". Whether he had possible brain damage from an accident, birth or was handicap, it is unknown.
Henry, was at one point married to Mae and had a daughter named Lela(who never married) and a son Gerald.
The oldest of the three brothers, Gerald, went to Canada and had 2 children(1 boy and 1 girl). The only thing that Cecily could remember about them was that the boy was black and he died. The girl was 1/2 black and she married a black.(Please, this is not ment to offend anyone, it is only distinguishing feature we have to possible link us to any other family.)
Another possible relative, is Persivil/Percival Barnett. It is also possible that Harry was named for this person. (Harry Percival Shirley, if that is indeed his name.)
Harry's wife was Ethel Ella/Ellen Maude Philpot(t)s. She was raised by her grandparents. There is also a referance in the notes to Ethel's father "was/had a twin in Canada". Ethel was English.
Harry went to the states after the completion of the Panama Canal. That was several years before the family followed in 1924.
Hope this links us to someone or at least gets us closer!
