The Disc

September 2003

This month's disc is a doozy, featuring the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Medal of Honor: Spearhead demos, plus for you sensible types, demos of VirusBarrier X, ContentBarrier C, and NetBarrier X - that should be enough barriers to ride out the world-wide worm storm.

Known Issues

Hey - what's up with the Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo installer?

The installer for the UT 2003 demo on August's disc is, in a word, hosed - but not fatally. Read on for the quick fix that'll have you up and fragging in no time.

Problem: After running the installer, double clicking on the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo application icon doesn't launch the game.

Solution: (gleaned from this forum thread - thanks mr_mac_x!)

  • Control-Click on the UT demp application icon and select Reveal Package Contents from the Contextual Menu that appears.
  • In the resulting window, double click the folder labeled System to open it.
  • Find the file UT2003-bin and Conrtol-click on it. Select Open With: Other from the Contextual Menu.
  • In the resulting dialog box, change the top-most pull-down menu from Show Recommended Applications to Show All Applications and navigate to Applications/Utilities/ and select Terminal. Click Open (or double-click the Terminal icon).
  • Paydirt! The demo should launch directly and you're ready for action.
  • Note: keep these instructions handy for future fragging - we haven't been able to make the Always Open With part stick and have to repeat this Contextual Menu voodoo every time (and yes, we tried checking the Always Open With box).

Bonus!

The index of all the MacAddict discs covers all discs through March 2003 (#79). You will need DiskTracker to view it; you can get DiskTracker from disktracker.com, or you can grab it right here (1.3MB .sit file) - or you can get it off the current March Disc, #79.
