Durham Challenge Cup Final
Billingham Town 2 : Bishop Auckland 0
12 April, 2004
Team: Riches, Ross (Crossman 74mins), Batey , Robson, West, Hope, Moore, Fenwick, Maddison (Foster 65mins), Scaife, Irvine
Another makeshift Bishops side put in another lacklustre performance to crash to their first defeat against Northern League opposition in 8 years. Fenwick came in up front for his first game of the season and Batey returned for his first start this year.
Bishops started brightly and created two good chances early on with Maddison first getting clear only to get the ball tangled up beneath himself on four minutes then Scaife broke free only to fire his shot high and wide of the goal.
1st Half: Irvine climbs high
Billingham created no problems for Riches for most of the first half and the scores looked like being level as half time approached. In injury time Bishops created a good chance when a free kick from Irvine was deflected into the path of Hope, but he was unable to bundle the ball home. Then a long ball up field from Billingham was played over the Bishops defensive line and Swalwell fired home off the foot of the post.
Whilst it was Bishops who shaded the first half the second belonged to Billingham Town. But again there were few chances at either end before Turner settled the game in Billingham's favour on 80 minutes.
2nd Half: Moore attacks from the left
Irvine went close when his in-swinging corner nearly found the net, but Bishops heads were down and the chance to win a third final in four years was gone.
