Durham Challenge Semi Final
Jarrow Roofing 2 : Bishop Auckland 5
3 February, 2004
Report from John Cowey - 3 February, 2004
Team: Riches, Rowe, Foster, Scaife (Ross 76mins), West, Hope, Moore, Robson (?? 83mins), Maddison, Salvin (Shingleton 72mins), Irvine
Bishops survived a shaky first half against a strong wind to win this semi-final tie comfortably in the second half.
Moore caused havoc in the first minute when his run was checked by a Roofer but his crosses could not be converted. Jarrow Roofing took the lead on 16 minutes when the Bishops defence failed to deal with a long ball and Cogden converted.
West almost leveled on 40 minutes when his glancing header from an Irvine corner was cleared off the line but the equaliser came on the stroke of half time. A cross from the left was deflected into the air and ex-Bishop Caffry missed the ball as it spun back to ground. Salvin deflected the ball home with the back of his head from four yards out.
The second half started at a frantic pace and Bishops wasted no time in taking the lead. Maddison fed Moore and he struck low from the edge of the area to make it 2-1 on 51 minutes.
On 59 minutes Salvin's shot was blocked by Caffry but Maddison finished off the rebound with a spectacular diving header. But Jarrow immediately pegged a goal back when the prolific Chow scored on 60 minutes.
Maddison again benefited from Salvin's bad luck when his shot from close range was blocked and Maddison picked up the pieces inside the box for his second of the night.
Scaife hit the fifth on 66 minutes with a shot from 18 yards. Although numerous chances were created after that a combination of bad finishing and bad luck kept the score down to 5-2.
A good game for the team, and let's hope Jarrow Roofing are successful in joining us in the UniBond next year.
