QUORN....The latest target of the food police is apparently something called Quorn: "good enough to eat, won't taste of anything, very bland." Yum!

I don't actually have any comment about this, but I found today's LA Times article about the great Quorn battle pretty entertaining. Personally, though, I think I'll remain faithful to food that sticks to your arteries.

Oh come on, Kevin. You haven't tried Quorn? It's available at Safeway for crying out loud. And actually, the nuggets taste pretty good. The cool thing about it is the texture, it's a mycoprotein, so it feels more meatlike.

There's currently a box of Quorn patties sitting in my freezer.

It's been there for about six months, I think.
My wife tried them and said they tasted strange, and that was good enough for me. I have had some bad experiences with imitation meats. Learning that it was created from fungus didn't make it more appealing.

And could they have found a less appetizing name? It sounds like a Star Trek villain or something.

I guess I should get around to throwing that stuff away at some point.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of the Morningstar Farms "buffalo wings."

Posted by: JakeV at March 12, 2004 06:01 PM | PERMALINK

I have no idea what QUORN is but I just wish people would go to the grocery store and buy raw food and go home and cook it. Honestly, it would take no more time than going to a restaurant. Yes, a few more expended calories. But, honestly, if only half of the population did this we wouldn't have the problems we have with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. It's only common sense, people.

Posted by: Babba at March 12, 2004 06:04 PM | PERMALINK

Hey, Quorn is my favorite meat-substitute. It tastes really good, the texture is excellent, and its nutritional stats are pretty decent. If you're not used to meat-subs, you might find it "strange"

Regardless, people die from eating peanuts or other nut products, maybe this guy should be going after skippy or something.

Posted by: Salmon Girl at March 12, 2004 06:22 PM | PERMALINK

Yum, yum. It sounds like something out of science fiction. "vat grown fungal protein" fit for making pig- and human-chow.

Posted by: p mac at March 12, 2004 06:23 PM | PERMALINK

Well, as a vegetarian for 12 years, I've had opportunity to try just about every new vegeterian product that has hit the market. Up to and including vegetarian salmon. I kid you not. (It was only after I tried it that I remembered that I didn't like salmon even back when I was eating meat.)

Quorn is actually not bad. I've tried most of the various products made from it, and enjoyed them all, with no ill effects. What people have to remember about these products is that their about convenience and flexibility. Convenience because they can be popped in the microware. Flexibility because they can be substituted in just about any meat based recipe. (My hubby, a hard-core lover of red meat, loves my "Vegetarian Bourbon Chicken.") When we have company for dinner, I'll just grab such a product and use it to prepare my own vegetarian version of the main dish.

But if Quorn isn't one's cup of tea, there are countless other veggie products out there.

Posted by: Terrance at March 12, 2004 06:32 PM | PERMALINK

Been a vegetarian for 20 years (yikes) and would love to love Quorn ... but the stuff's made by Monsanto. Too scary.

No thanks. I'm sticking to Bushmills.

Posted by: bobbyp at March 12, 2004 06:36 PM | PERMALINK

I use soy-based products for pretty much all of my cooking. It sucks up the sauce/flavour better than any meat than I've seen.

I'll try the stuff and see if it's any good, it would need to have the same property as it comes to absorbtion.

BTW, JakeV, please don't mention those Buffalo Wings. I havn't had them in the longest time. They are wonderful with a dip of mayonnaise and relish and a bit of milk as a thinner.

And if my wife sees this post, I won't hear the end of it :)

Posted by: Karmakin at March 12, 2004 06:39 PM | PERMALINK

The only problem with that suggestion, Babba, is that there is a better than average chance that in the restaurant's kitchen there is somebody who knows how to cook.

The same cannot always be said for my kitchen. :)

My wife and I are addicted to the Quorn 'roast.'

Serve it with mashed potatoes and some sauce and it really is only 1/2 a step from chicken or turkey. And I am pretty picky about my meat substitutes (my wife's vegetarian and has had to introduce me to these things).

BTW, another great substitute is Gimme Lean...get it "Jimmy Dean?" It comes in logs like sausage, but it doesn't have the heavy grease that real sausage does.

Posted by: Josh H at March 12, 2004 07:39 PM | PERMALINK

Josh -- Generally, I'll go for any excuse to have mashed potatoes. But Quorn roast?! What ever do you make the sauce from? Just a hunch here, but somehow I'm guessing your formula doesn't rely on pan drippings & veal stock....

Kevin,

I refer you to your own standards in your post below.

I know you have a marketing background. Didn't it occur to you to do conduct even a cursory check into the funders of the 'Center for Science in the Public Interest'?

The guy who labelled Quorn a mold (it is a fungus) promotes Gardenburger ( a quorn competitor) is also the spokesman for Center for science in the public interest (arguably the soy lobby too).

Less credulous commentary please Kevin.

As it is you've allied yourself with one side of a marketing exercise.

Posted by: Funguy at March 12, 2004 08:03 PM | PERMALINK

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has some pretty tough things to say about Quorn, including, but not limited to, the fact that it is an allergen.

Posted by: lennyesq at March 12, 2004 08:04 PM | PERMALINK

Quorn's pretty good. throw some sketti sauce and mozzarella on it - Quorn Parmasan! the "crumbles" are pretty good in spaghetti, too. and the breaded patties aren't bad all by themselves.

you can't even tell it's made from the mushroom's retarded cousin.

Posted by: cleek at March 12, 2004 08:06 PM | PERMALINK

the fact that it is an allergen.

so are peanuts, shellfish, red wine and a bunch of other tasty things. (and cats, dogs and anything else with fur, flowers, grasses, trees, dust, birds, etc..)

Posted by: cleek at March 12, 2004 08:10 PM | PERMALINK

Here's a response to some of the stuff that the CSPI has put out, from Jacon Sullum at Reason. Mind you, it still doesn't make this fungal concoction sound appealing, but it's another point of view ....

Posted by: ned at March 12, 2004 08:16 PM | PERMALINK

Ooh, not fungus!
Why, that would be like bleu cheese, bread (yeast and fungus are in the same taxonomic grouping of single celled eukaryotes), beer (ditto) and of course, mushrooms. Just because one kind of fungus grows on your wall doesn't make fungus a bad thing. All that said, I wouldn't eat it, but I'm not a big fan of Tofu or gardenburgers or any of the rest of it. Give me a good ol' fashioned E. coli O157:H7 burger any day.

Posted by: Paul Orwin at March 12, 2004 08:34 PM | PERMALINK

I eat Quorn fairly often, in various varieties. It's delicious (the "mycoprotein" fungus base material is what is being described as bland) and the texture is definitely the most meatlike of any vegetarian meat substitute I have tried. I am familiar with the debate, but I have certainly never had any negative health reaction. It seems like all the evidence against it is anecdotal and probably connected with people's suspicions or distaste of a product "grown in a vat" from "soil fungus." Anyone who feels sick after eating is likely to blame the "suspicious" new food. I'm all in favor of testing, but I doubt Quorn will prove a worse health hazard than any of a million other things people happen to be allergic to (wheat, dairy, nuts, etc etc). So put a warning label on it or something.

Posted by: Elizabeth D. at March 12, 2004 08:37 PM | PERMALINK

By the way, I can pretty much guarantee that many people put off by the idea of eating "fungus" would be won over by the actual Quorn product. Not only is it good-tasting and good-textured, it is substantially lower fat and lower calorie than meat, and full of fiber, of which meat has none at all.

Posted by: Elizabeth D. at March 12, 2004 08:44 PM | PERMALINK

Ned, thanks for the link!

I share the same prejudice for farm-raised over vat-grown as this goofball from CSPI, but I've never felt compelled to scare the crap out of the general public about it.

Apologies to any fungi I may have offended. I'll go have a beer now....

Posted by: ned at March 12, 2004 08:45 PM | PERMALINK

Quorn is cooked up in a big vat about 5 miles from my home town. Yes. it's a fungus. So are mushrooms and truffles. And, guess what: one of the reasons why vegetarians tend to like mushrooms and truffles is that you get the savoury taste without the whole badly-raised, carelessly-slaughtered meat thing. And Quorn has more taste than TVP (or certain soy-based fake-meats).

(Yes, I also like Marmite, which is made from the dead yeast scraped out of the bottom of beer-brewing vats. So sue me.)

Frankly, if any Americans are worried about it after years of gorging on GMO soy, corn and wheat -- or, worse, on meat and dairy products laced with growth hormone and antibiotics -- then they need hitting very hard with the priority stick.

Posted by: nick sweeney at March 12, 2004 08:49 PM | PERMALINK

There are zillions of good vegetarian meat substitutes out there made of things like wheat, soy, etc. There is absolutely no need to make vat meat out of fungus.

Posted by: phil at March 12, 2004 09:12 PM | PERMALINK

Quorn rocks. It's the best meat substitute there is. The roast isn't going to trick anyone into thinking it's turkey, but still in all it's pretty good. The chicken nuggets and the fried chicken patties are really nice and I think hard to tell the difference from the real. The chicken chunks aren't htat flavorful, but all in all it's a good alternative. To those that knock it, don't until you've tried it.

Posted by: kj at March 12, 2004 09:32 PM | PERMALINK

I have eaten Quorn chicken patties about twice a week for the last two years with no ill effects whatsoever. Didn't realize it was grown in vats, but still, it's gotta be healthier than your average Whataburger. Probably less mercury than fish.

"Yes, I also like Marmite, which is made from the dead yeast scraped out of the bottom of beer-brewing vats. So sue me.)"

Marmite, ick! Vegemite is superior. I do mean that seriously; after an extended discussion on a mailing list about Vegemite and Marmite I bought a small bottle of each and tried them on toast. Vegemite, the Australian product (although Kraft distributes it now), has a consistency not unlike creamy peanut butter, so it's easy to spread; also to my palate its taste is not as harsh as that of Marmite. Marmite's real offence though is its consistency, not creamy like Vegemite but glutinous, sticky, like molasses that's just been taken out of the refrigerator. It's almost impossible to spread thinly and because of that I was always putting too much on the bread--and it's _strong_, far stronger-tasting than Vegemite and not in a pleasant way.

"There is absolutely no need to make vat meat out of fungus."

I don't go in for meat "substitutes"; I experimented with tofu cookery for a time and came to the conclusion that anything which needed so much work to make it less slimy and more palatable (e.g. freezing it or salting and pressing it to get the excess water out) was not worth cooking with. Far easier either to cook a steak or to cook plain vegetables. But, judging from the approving comments made here and elsewhere, there does indeed seem to be a _need_--well, a desire--for this product that other substitutes do not satisfy. And it comes out of a vat? This is bad? So does beer, wine, and whisky, not to mention processed foods like cheese and yoghurt. Heck, even that block of bean curd probably came out of a vat somewhere; that's how industrial food processing works. We accept it without murmur in so many other instances and yet, because it's "mycoprotein" (inaccurately labelled? Does this food Nazi clown know what "myco-" means?), it must be nasty and icky?

I swear, dangle words like "fungus" in front of people and their brains stop working. It's like "nuclear" or "radiation", a word that automatically conjures up imaginary horrors.

Posted by: Ernest Tomlinson at March 12, 2004 11:05 PM | PERMALINK

[Marmite is] _strong_, far stronger-tasting than Vegemite and not in a good way

The British advertising campaign for Marmite is "You'll either love it or hate it", with shots of people eating it and either loving it, or retching, making ugly faces, etc.

Personally, I love it. Much nicer than the bland Vegemite.

Posted by: Keith at March 13, 2004 01:59 AM | PERMALINK

Quorn is great - and that's spoken as a non-vegetarian who's quite wary of vegeterian meat substitutes. Here in Sweden "fungus" and "mushroom" are the same word, so there's less stigma attached to its origin, which I suspect has helped its success here.

The texture is very meaty, and the flavor discreet enough that it can be used in most chicken-based dishes to great effect.

Posted by: Teaflax at March 13, 2004 03:51 AM | PERMALINK

When world population becomes higher and land surface is so expensive that raising cattle for food is a costly luxury, we will be eating Quorn and telling each other how good it is. Soylent Green burgers, anyone? Yum.

Quorn? Quorn? That's in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia - it's rocky and dusty and dry and hot (except when it's winter and bitterly cold) and has the oldest fossils in the world. Don't remember any good restaurants though...

Posted by: qtip at March 13, 2004 08:43 AM | PERMALINK

Also a vegetarian (pesco-ovo flavor), I'm allways interested in fake meat/polutry etc... Not so much as to make up for the meat itself, but rather to be the core part of a meal along with some regular veegie side dishes. But if its true that Monsanto is behind it then I'm troubled indeed. I have (a possible irrational, but not entirely baseless) passionate dislike for that company and all it stands for. Its history of polluting the planet goes way back, and their cavalier attitude regarding the dangers of some of their existing products and research programs is scary in the extreme.

Any carnivores out there saying "ewww, made in a vat..." should take a tour of a cattle, pig, or chicken farm sometime. Nasty. And I still eat the stuff, but I don't get all prissy about vats and "chemicals" (e.g. corn syrup and ammonia aka very pure fertilizer).

Posted by: loser at March 13, 2004 04:04 PM | PERMALINK

Well, I went out shopping today and stopped by my local natural food market where I picked up a box of Quorn patties. Together with some oven fries and baked beans I must say they were quite tasty. A little high in sodium, probably because of the breading that the patties were covered with. A little ketchup also helped. On balance I think I have a new meat substitute to keep in the freezer.

Posted by: freemti at March 13, 2004 04:15 PM | PERMALINK

Back when I lived in the UK, my (now ex-)girlfriend cooked me a few dinners using Quorn. At first I thought she using actual chopped meat but cooking it to the point where it had no flavor. Then I discovered what Quorn was and was sort of impressed. There really isn't a moral to this story.

Posted by: David at March 13, 2004 11:45 PM | PERMALINK

My wife is vegetarian so I've probably eaten dozens of quorn meals over the last 5 years or so.

It's tasty, healthy and though it doesn't taste as good as real meat it's the best substitute I've found.

Consideri how health scare conscious the British are, with panic over GM foods & mad cow disease, I feel that if there were any serious evidence of Quorn being bad for you then we would have heard it over here.

Posted by: Raj at March 14, 2004 01:17 AM | PERMALINK

If you want to eat vegetarian, do it right. Eat the dishes of a vegetarian culture with a highly evolved cusine-- India. Your basic meat replacement is going to be a stew of lentils or chick peas, perhaps as a curry, or perhaps in yogurt sauce with dill. The point is that in trying to make vegetables into phoney meat, you are destroying their natural texture.

Posted by: Andrew D. Todd at March 14, 2004 02:41 AM | PERMALINK

Have you been reading? It's not vegetable matter, it's humongusfungusamongus.

Indian food is very very tasty tho, I agree. Watch out for the fats, can be just as bad for you as a big mac.

Posted by: loser at March 14, 2004 01:03 PM | PERMALINK

Just one more person who has tried Quorn -- it's the only vegetarian option for chicken that actually looks, smells, feels (texture) and tastes like chicken. Unfortunately, at least here in Austin, it's also the most expensive option. But it's worth it. Makes great chicken parmesan.

Posted by: Brea at March 15, 2004 06:10 AM | PERMALINK

note that 'The Quorn' is actually an ancient (since the 1600's) fox-hunting area - "parishes in the counties of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derby in what is known traditionally as The Quorn Country."

see
http://www.quornhunt.co.uk/pages/about.php3

Which of course reminds one of Oscar describing foxhunting, "the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable". Perhaps Quorn was not the most felicitous of names..

Two points: Firstly, Quorn is originally manufactured by Marlow Foods in England as a previous poster has identified. It tastes fine and is a decent meat substitute. I have been eating it on and off for a couple of years and have never had any ill effects.

Secondly, With regard to the perenial Marmite versus Vegemite debate, it has to be Marmite by a long way. The stumbling block to enjoying Marmite is that people do not know how to eat it. The perfect recipe is to scrape it very sparingly onto toasted bread, then lavishly apply the butter of your choice. Then you will understand what Marmite is all about! Hmmm Marmite.
