RCA RD2760 :: 1.5gb mini-player $129
RCA Lyra Music Jukebox
Here's a reasonable deal if you're more concerned about price and size. Compgeeks has the RCA RD2760 at $129. This is a 1.5gb mini-player kind of like the Rio Nitrus. It's thicker, but you get a much bigger screen. The RD2760 works as an external hard drive (MSC) and has a self-databasing function just like the RCA RD2840 (see last newspost). Again, you have MP3 & WMA playback, a USB2 interface, 10 hours of battery life, and there's a customizable EQ to play with. The 1.5gb worth of storage isn't much compared to full-size players, but it can hold about 15 albums and that's plenty for some people. |
Compgeeks.com has the RCA RD2840 on sale for $170 and this is the last day at this price. It's not the smallest or the prettiest thing on the block but if you need a lot of space for cheap, this is as good as it gets. The RD2840 is mass-storage complient so it also functions as an external hard drive, and it has a self-databasing feature so you don't have to use any software to load music. Plays MP3 and WMA, and other goodies include a 6-line LCD, USB 2, 10+ hours playback, Line-output, & a Custom EQ. Use coupon code GEEKLYRA to get the discount during checkout. |

Sneak Peak at the iSkin case for iRiver H120/140
Jeff over at MisticRiver gots his hands on a sample of the new iSkin case for the iRiver H120 and H140. It's basically a plastic covering that slips over the player, with a swivel-clip in the back so you can wear on it on your belt. Check out the gallery HERE. Not on sale yet, but soon (about 10 days). Will be available in 5 colors - black, grey, blue, clear frosted, and glo (?). No word on the price yet but I'd guess $20-30.

The Carbon can no longer be turned off when connected to your computers USB port. This allows the player to charge while it's connected
Download HERE. I'll note that I havn't experienced any of the problems that they've supposedly corrected, on my Carbon. Works like a charm (as long you put some tape over the headphone jack ).
Also, Rio Music Manager v.2.90 is out, download it on the same page (hit the Software tab). Too much new stuff to list. If you have a Rio player, just grab it.

NeoSoltek's Cliod official homepage thing
We've mentioned the NeoSoltek Cliod a couple of times before (e.g. in HERE), but now it's officially out in Korea - so they decided it deserved a fanpage of its' own as well. There's lots of stuff to check out, for instance the SPEC PAGE. There we can see that the Cliod will have that 24-bit OLED screen, and that some versions have a tv-tuner built inside of them. Others come with FM radio instead. | |
Good news: NeoSoltek realized that 2.5GB was a bit too "economical" for some users, so there's a 5GB version available as well. Plus, it supports WMV video files - always a good thing, I guess.
Prices aren't anything to get excited about, though. The cheapest version will cost about 340 Euro (in Korea), whereas the top-line edition comes with a pricetag of about 400 Euro. For those interested, some kinda review-like thingy is available HERE. Screen doesn't look too convincing to me, at first glance. Nevertheless, I will take one if they throw it at me - not very likely though. Oh, and if you happen to click on one of the top-menubar items, remove the "www"-prefix, otherwise the site won't load (nasty little bug, mr Cliod-guys).

C|Net's Rio Carbon review: 8.3/10
HERE you can read what C|Net has to say about the Carbon.
Design: 9
Features: 7
Performance: 9
"While the included earbuds are termed high quality, the Carbon deserves to be listened to on bigger headphones. Just make sure your headphones do not have the aforementioned metallic ring around the base of the plug, which can result in static (see Features). Yes, there is a low-tech fix for this problem. But coming from an otherwise polished player, it's a shame that Rio didn't catch this before the unit went into production."
Hey Austin, you've just made C|Net !
Thanks, Lone

iRiver's PiMP juice is officially out in Asia
Well, it was pretty unique for iRiver to release the PMP-1x0 series in the US before actually setting it loose on the Korean market. Nevertheless, you need those weird Korean characters and pics/specs, so HERE they are.
[ image disabled ]
Cough... Archos... cough... more versatile... cough... or more compact... Excuse me, I'm catching a bad case of the sensible-thinking-flue. The PMP's looking pretty nice, though. At least it stands out in between all of those random PMP/PVP-things, design-wise.

Xcent XT-100: nice-looking flashplayer nr 1782b
Another rather nice-looking flash player with a capacity up to 1GB, this Xcent XT-100. Comes with an oled, for instance - which adds to the clean design. Available in two colors: Metallic Silver/Dark Gray. The XT-100 measures 72 x 35 x 14mm (give or take a mm, since the site reports somewhat different figures as well) and weighs some 45 grams, battery included. Speaking of which: the built-in rechargeable li-polymer battery is pretty powerful, given the fact that it can play for 23 hours continuously.
Also in the deal are FM-tuner & recorder, voice recorder & line-in encoder. SRS WoW supplies up to 29mW output per channel, although 10mW is the "normal" specification. S/N ratio seems to be >85 dB, but who cares - that's pleasure you can't measure anyway. Only drawback: it still uses USB1.1. Which is sucky for 1GB.
