Madison County Covered Bridge Festival October 9-10, 2004 Each year on the second full weekend in October, county residents gather under the brilliant hues of autumn to celebrate our historic covered bridges. The festival features artisans demonstrating the old-fashioned ways, booths with delightful crafts and delectable foods, nonstop music and entertainment, a quilt show, childrens amusement rides, a car show, antique vehicle parade, guided bus tours of the covered bridges and so much more! |

Hollywood legend John Wayne was born Marion Morrison in Winterset on May 26, 1907. Guided tours of his Birthplace home are available from 10:00am to 4:30pm daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's day. The official website, http://www.johnwaynebirthplace.org was recently expanded, and their wide selection of John Wayne-related items are now available for purchase at their site. Sales of these products help support the John Wayne Birthplace Society, a non-profit group which exists to preserve and expand the Birthplace of Wintersets most famous resident. A ceremony for the Commemorative Issue of the new John Wayne postage stamp will be held at the Birthplace of John Wayne on Saturday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. during the 2004 Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. John Waynes daughter Melinda will also be on hand for the ceremony. |

Headquarters for Fons & Porters Love of Quilting Celebrated quilters Marianne Fons and Liz Porter own and operate their retail store, Fons & Porter Quilt Supply, at 54 Court Ave. on the south side of Wintersets historic town square. Fons & Porter are hosts of Americas #1 quilting program on Public Television, Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting. They are also owners and editors of Love of Quilting magazine, a bimonthly publication for quilters worldwide magazine with a circulation of over 350,000 readers. The new Cedar Covered Bridge replica is in place and will be dedicated this Saturday, September 9th at 5pm during the 2004 Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. Governor and Mrs. Vilsack will be on hand to proclaim Winterset an Iowa Shines community at the dedication. The original bridge was destroyed by fire September 3, 2002. A $41,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist.
