The World Cyber Games 2004 Continue... - Virax -
10/8/04 13:11 PST - General UT2004 News
Continuing on yesterday's WCG, the next half of the 16 groups of 4 players will play today, starting at 5 PM EST. If you're interested as to how the whole system works, the two best out of four in each of the sixteen groups qualify, and it will progress in a general tournament style from there. Since only half of the matches have been played so far, only sixteen of the 32 players who will be playing in the actual tourney have been determined. You can see the results thus far right here! However, that link only shows the winners so far - if you want more complete information, as well as the losers, scores, and maps played, you should check this page. Unsurprisingly, most of the players I mentioned yesterday are there. ;)

Again, head on over to this thread on the Atari/INA forums, if you wish to listen to a live streaming audio report of the second half of the WCG`04 UT2004 grand final qualifiers.

Go Toque!

UPDATE: The second half of the grand-final single-tournament qualifiers have ended, and all thirty-two remaining players have been determined. Once it's updated, this page, as previously mentioned, should show the bracket results with who's up against who for the next batch of matches. Unfortunately, Toque isn't one of them. :( Well, now that Toque is out, Stryfe and GiMiX are my personal favorites. Go them!

Robin Hood and the King's Ransom DL - Virax -
10/8/04 18:56 PST - UT2004 Modifications
Some of you may remember a while back when the Phase 4 deadline hit, and there was an slew of mods hitting the public eye for download and dissection. Robin Hood and the King's Ransom was one of them. However, soon after, the download link died due to their website going down for some mysterious reason, which I was unable to discover. In addition, I was unable to discover another download mirror... until now. If you're still jones-ing for some Robin Hood cartoon-style action, this is definitely something you'll want. Don't ask me how I didn't find that last time, Fileplanet's search function has never seemed to like me. :( Here're the screenshots from the original post:
UPDATE: I've gotten word from the makers of the mod, the new website is open here!
The host we were using was taken down without giving us a heads up. We are in the process of getting as much content as we can back up on the new host. unfortunately we lost a lot of it when our host went offline.

Xfire 1.24 Released - redef -

Version 1.24 of Xfire is available for download. Since most of you folks probably aren’t familiar with Xfire, it is a gamer-oriented instant-messaging utility. It allows you to easily organize games with your buddies, message people from within a game, and do all sorts of keen stuff.

Proving Grounds Closes... - Virax -
10/8/04 13:24 PST - Elsewhere on the Web
A low blow has been dealt to the already dwindling competitive community by "financial pressures," with the announced closure of the Proving Grounds ladder today. Here's a bit of the official press release:
In the end, we have to admit that the financial issues must force us to close down, and in that respect, this closure will happen relatively quickly. On October 14th, 2004, PG will officially close its doors. We hope to hear from our committed members in the next week as we say our goodbyes, and afterwards as we become "just players", as we were before we began this thing we would come to love. Certainly, we more than expect to hear from the trolls who I have personally more than enjoyed schooling in lessons of humility.

So, please forgive us for this decision, wrap up your matches, and enjoy the last moments of Proving Grounds. We hope that you guys have enjoyed playing with us as much as we have enjoyed serving you.
The entire post may be read at their site.

UTXMP and Eon Screenshots and Article - Virax -
10/8/04 13:05 PST - Elsewhere on the Web
PC Gamer has put up this article on UTXMP, the high-quality and in-the-works modification recreating Unreal-MP for UT2004, as well as this one for the exceptionally beautiful mod Eon, which seems to have massive potential. Here're summaries of the articles.
TXMP is a faithful replica of what the XMP community has come to know and love. It will serve to both strengthen and expand the community (I personally will make a comeback, that's for sure!) and add some serious playtime to one of the most under appreciated first person shooters out there. Look forward for more coverage about UTXMP in our upcoming issues and on this site.

With this kind of attention to detail, one would expect Eon to either take an Eon to finish, or become an "all glamour no guts" shooter, but instead, the contrary is true. Take a look at the team behind Eon, and you'll understand why.

Come back next week as we continue our in depth look at one of most promising mods in development today...
And of course, here're a few of the many screenshots:

World Cyber Games Have Begun! - Virax - Comment!
10/7/04 14:12 PST - General UT2004 News
The 2004 World Cyber Games has recently begun, and for fans of games such as CS: CZ, StarCraft: Brood War, WarCraft III: Frozen Throne, FIFA Soccer 2004, NFS: Underground, Project Gotham Racing 2, Halo, and of course, our own beloved UT2004, there's plenty to be seen. And plenty to be won too, as the tourney - which is occuring in San Francisco, and outside of Korea for the first time - has over $400k of prizes to be won.

Top players from around the world have come to compete, and we can be sure that the demos that will probably be available for download soon after the event finishes will be spectacular. With well-established competitors such as Lauke, Forrest, Stryfe, Burnie, GitzZz, CombatCarl, eVeNfLoW, Spawn, and Varagh, as well as new but astonishing players such as GiMiX and Evil AVI, this will be something to follow.

UPDATE: The matches are being broadcast and covered via a Winamp stream. If you're interested in listening (It's quite entertaining, actually... I'm listening to the UT2004 stream as I write this), links to streams for each game are available over in this thread.

Killing Floor Screenshots - redef -
10/7/04 15:50 PST - UT2004 Modifications
In the news of the Killing Floor mod site are 5 screenshots of their London-based maps. They’re very atmospheric and have that spicy zombie-around-the-next-corner feel.

MapMixer's Creator Interviewed - Virax -
10/7/04 14:07 PST - Elsewhere on the Web
The creator of MapMixer, currently at version 2.10, has been interviewed by OceaniaUT over here. The interview is quite extensive, and if you're a fan of MapMixer, or if you're curious to know what it is, this interview is for you. The interview deals alot with the development and origin of the mod, as well as it's expected future.
Question: What kind of advice can you give peeps out there that might be interested in persuing a hobby or career along a similar path to you?

Answer: Hmm, well I'm not sure that I'm in a position to give advice, I'm just another guy out there with a keen interest, and to put it simply, that's what you need more of than anything else. If you are interested in something and are willing to put the hard work into achieving a goal then anyone can do it. Talent by itself won't get you anywhere - ya gotta work for it. Unfortunately I always tend to underrate myself because I'm probably more focused of the things I don't know than the things I do know. I think being open minded is quite important as well because being too focused on one particular way of thinking will limit what you are capable of.

More Necris For You! - Virax -
10/7/04 14:03 PST - General UT2004 News
If you weren't exactly pleased by the horrible quality Necris found in the ECE, you'll be glad to hear that some real Necris skins are out. Similar to the ones done by Flytag in some repects, these are definitely worth downloading. Whether you prefer them over Flytag's or not is a personal opinion, as both are quite nice. There are ten skins in this new pack (The author is D3@thchild, by the way), and each has teamskins.

ECE Vehicle Concept Art - Virax -
10/6/04 18:13 PST - General UT2004 News
Hawkprey of Epic Games has posted up the concept art and first pass renders of two of the vehicles from the recently released Editor's Choice Edition, in this thread on the Polycount forums. Here we see what became the Paladin and the Cicada, without immensely different changes, but a few, here and there.
Hey guys. Loooooooooooonnnnng time since I have posted anything. Got permission to toss these up and thought you guys would appreciate them. I was able to take a break from my normal duties here at Epic and design some vehicles for the Editors Choice Edition of Tournament 2004. It was a blast!

Basically, I had a day to design each one according to specs that Mr Lee Perry gave me. I tried my best to keep them in line with the vehicles that already existed in Tournament. Then Mr Kevin "Rorshach" Johnstone took the design and busted out the vehicle, making changes as he saw appropriate. It was balls to the wall. I think we had all the vehicles in-game within a week.

There were tweaks made down the line as game play issues arose, but I thought you might like to see how these things started out. Here is the scrawl, kiddies.
So what are you waiting for? Go check them out!

Clan Tools 2.02 Released! - Virax -
10/6/04 16:13 PST - Commentary and Fun Stuff
VWare has released Clan Tools 2.02, an application that is designed to help online gamers in various tasks. Like so much of the applications put out by the gracious and skilled modders of the Unreal community, this application is quite useful, and entirely free. In this release of Clan Tools, most imporovements were made to the IRC scorebot, the timer application, as well as the mIRC script. Furthermore, various bugs have been fixed, and the installer finally improved to reduce problems with fresh installs and updates.
  • Default profile in IRC Score, more flexible profile configuration
  • Heavily updated mIRC script, with lots of bugs fixed
  • Improved support for Doom 3
  • Bugs in Clan Admin fixed according to user feedback
  • Using DirectShow subsystem for sound output
  • Much more flexible configuration and sound output in PUTimer
  • Fresh and exclusive sounds featuring the voice of Yasmin Shehata
Here's what the developer(s) have to say.
With 53 entries in the changelogs, this new version includes much more updates and fixes than the ones listed above. Also, links to our donation system were added, since maintaining the services costs more and more money. A detailed list of changes can be found at http://www.vware.at in the release news post.

PC Zone Loves Shattered Oasis Too! - Virax -
10/6/04 15:50 PST - UT2004 Modifications
Apparently the editor's of PC Zone have recently grown a fetish for UT2004 mods, as they're also featuring an article on Shattered Oasis, in addition to the article on UTXMP (read news post earlier today.) Again, the article can be seen in this image, but if you like the content, it's best to show your appreciation for the work being done by these guys, and buy the mag at a local store. Here's a bit of what PC Zone had to say...
Well, whether or not we're all going to hell in a handbasket, we can at least see what it [a post-apocalyptic world] might look like with quality mods like Shattered Oasis.
The makers of Shattered Oasis excitedly commented upon the article:
That is what PCZone had to say in their latest issue. Shattered Oasis scored an impressive 83% and received a “PCZone Essential,” and they only played version 2.20! If 2.20 scored that highly, then the next full build, 2.50, is a MUST to be checked out.
Additional information pertaining to v2.50 is available in the entire news post.

TrekUT Site Launches + Recruiting - Virax -
10/6/04 12:26 PST - UT2004 Modifications
A website for TrekUT (a Star Trek-themed mod) has been launched. Check it out if you’re a Trekker! Anyhow, the team is looking for some people to help out, so if you're a fan of the series, and a skilled modder in one of these positions, your help would most definitely be appreciated. They're currently looking for:
  • Mappers
  • Texture artists
  • Animators
  • Programmers
  • Designers
  • Skinners
  • Sound FX Guys
  • Musicians
  • Modellers
  • Story Writers
Yeah, pretty much people for each and ever position. But, don't let that deter you from looking to join! All mods have to start somewhere, and I'm sure the current team would greatly appreciate any new and skilled members helping to establish the mod. If you're interested, register at their forums and send a PM to UT2K3Freak.

UTXMP in PC Zone - Virax -
10/6/04 12:19 PST - UT2004 Modifications
The highly anticipated port of U2's multiplayer to UT, UTXMP, is to be found in this month's upcoming PC Zone magazine. For those suscribing to this magazine, you'll get video previews on the disc, and an article in the mag. While the article is available as a scan in this forum thread, please note that it's not actually released as of yet, as the magazine incorrectly claims.

I encourage those who are interested in this to actually purchase the magazine, as it is often considered piracy to leech articles on the internet, via scans.

Unreal Fortress Evolution Help Needed - redef -
10/6/04 9:59 PST - UT2004 Modifications
The Unreal Fortress Evolution team needs a little help developing their mod. Here’s some info:
We are trying to make a fortress based mod. The mod is and will stay free. We are aiming the quality of TFC/UNF altough it takes time and efforts. While artists are doing a great job, we are currently running out of coders, it is why we are now seeking for talentuous open minded programmers, who would know the fun of various fortress modifications. A big part of the project has been done. What left is:
  • The grenades
  • The sentry gun
  • Some skill things: Bunnyhop and conc jumping
  • And few miscellaneous things: minor effects, weapon balance, etc...
The rest (weapons, class, game rules, ...) has been coded but may be subject to modifications. If you are new with the unreal engine, a knowledge of Java and object oriented programming would be a plus. We are specially willing this mod to be tested and tuned for multiplaying. Please send us a little explanation about yourself and your programming experience. Please send me an email to jason.church2@ntlworld.com
