Lady Lions rout Vologda Russia
By BRAD STRATTON
In a friendly exhibition game Friday night at The Bryce Jordan Center, the Penn State women's basketball team put on a clinic for the visiting Russians on how to play American basketball.
The Lady Lions welcomed the visitors to the United States with a dominating 116-52 win against Vologda Russia.
Before a crowd of 4,054, the Lions took a lead 3:05 into the game and never relinquished it, piling on the scoring while the confused Russians desperately tried to keep up. | ||||

Eight of the nine Penn State women's basketball players reached double digits in scoring, with junior forward Lisa Shepherd leading the way with 20 points. Shepherd also provided the Lions with four of the team's 10 3-pointers.
Penn State coach Rene Portland's new three-post system was largely an omission in the game play, as senior Andrea Garner played more of her traditional center role.
"It's probably something you're only going to see five minutes a shot," Portland said, "until we can get a little more comfortable with it. But it's something you will see. Another big reason why you can't do it is because every big kid picked up two fouls."
The game started slowly enough, with each team managing one field goal two minutes into the game.
Vologda Russia took the lead 36 seconds later with a 3-pointer by Irina Passadskaya. But 13 straight points in the next four minutes gave the Lions a 15-5 lead, and Vologda never recovered.
Penn State's lead would reach 20 midway through the first half, and the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Lions holding a 58-28 halftime lead.
The second half was a duplicate of the first half, with Penn State's lead continuing to increase, ultimately reaching a scoring margin of 64 points at game's end.
Vologda spent the game its first on a two-week tour of the United States struggling to play the American style of basketball.
"They're a fast team with lots of individual play," Vologda Russia women's basketball coach Tatiana Karamisheva said through her interpreter, "and kind of different from European teams. After two or three games, hopefully the girls will get used to different rules."
Vologda Russia was unable to sustain any momentum, shooting 322 from the field and hitting one of 11 3-point attempts. Forward Marina Kress led the visitors with 18 points.
Despite the rout, Portland still managed to find problems with her team's play.
"Things that concern me are turnovers and game shape," Portland said. "I think Helen (Darling) and Lisa (Shepherd) really looked like the only two that could have played 30 minutes tonight if they had to."
The 116 points were the most points the Lions ever have scored in a game exhibition or regular at the Jordan Center and the most since destroying Morgan State, 118-31 on Dec. 29, 1993, in Hilton Head, S.C. "Tonight was just mainly to see where we were on the little things," Shepherd said. "Just to see what we have to work on in practice to get ready for our very first game. We came in not knowing anything about this team and that was our main focus."
