Netmen begin Big Ten schedule with victory

The Penn State men's tennis team knew the importance of starting off its Big Ten schedule with a win. It did not disappoint.

After just one conference win a year ago, the Nittany Lions emerged victorious this past Sunday in their first conference matchup of the season with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

The Lions (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches. Senior Mike Griesser and junior Marc Dorfman led the way in winning the No. 1 and 2 matches. Dorfman edged out Buckeye sophomore Andrew Carlson (7-5, 2-6, 6-4) while Griesser defeated sophomore Chris Porter (7-6, 3-6, 6-3). Porter is ranked No. 93 nationally.

For the Buckeyes (3-3, 0-2), it was their third straight loss by a 6-1 score. The sole Buckeye singles winner was senior Ben Basil, who defeated Lion freshman Jamie Gresh (6-2, 6-3).

The Lions also got support from senior Eric Meditz, junior Jeffrey Martini and sophomore Marc McCallister, who all won their matches in straight sets.

The Lions won two of three doubles matches. In the No. 2 doubles matchup, the team of Martini and sophomore Damon Accardi won 8-6 over the Buckeye team of junior John Johansen and sophomore Derek DeFalco. In the No. 3 match, Griesser and McCallister defeated Buckeyes Basil and Porter, 8-1.

The Lions are in action this weekend, opening home play in the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. The Lions host American at 10 a.m. Saturday and Toledo at 2 p.m. Sunday.
