Like Grandfather, Like Grandson

George William Cowley at the Blue Coat Hospital BuildingUniversity College Chester staff had a surprise this week when George William Cowley dropped in to see them, to ask how his grandfather was behaving!

It turned out that Mr Cowley aged 98, seen here with College's Alistair Booth, is the grandson of William Bishop, who was the model for the Blue Boy statue on the front of the school.

Mr Cowley, who lives in Huddersfield, was on a brief coach visit to Chester, and had hoped to visit his regiment museum, but spent so much time in the Bluecoat that he said he'd have to leave it until his next visit!

George was involved in the last British cavalry charge, fighting against the Vichy French in Syria during World War Two.

He was promoted to warrant officer, went on to fight in North Africa and was mentioned in dispatches. He took part in the 1944 landings at Anzio, Italy. He was captured by the Germans during a night attack, taken first to Rome, then on to POW camps in Germany.

Mr Cowley's son David lives in South Africa where he works for an Internet Service provider and also as a consultant for Cape Town University.

University College Chester's Business Service Manager seized the opportunity to take the photo, and had emailed a copy to David in South Africa within minutes!
