Rashaun Freeman made a layup with 4.3 seconds left to lift Massachusetts to a 61-59 victory over No. 7 Connecticut on Thursday night.

No. 12 Michigan St. 85, E. Illinois 45
Rene Haynes had 18 points and eight rebounds in her first start this season to lead No. 12 Michigan State to an 85-45 victory over Eastern Illinois on Thursday night.

No. 1 Illinois 74, Georgetown 59
In Illinois' busy first week at No. 1, the team has practiced just once. During that practice, coach Bruce Weber told his sharp-shooting guards they couldn't take any 3-pointers, forcing them to work the ball inside.

No. 21 Purdue 69, No. 15 DePaul 61
No. 15 DePaul had yet to be tested in this young season, and it showed at Purdue on Thursday night.

Notre Dame had to wait a week to get back on the winning track.

In a Dec. 8 story about the Morehead State-Kentucky basketball game, The Associated Press reported erroneously that in a 71-40 loss, Morehead State scored its fewest points in a game since early in the 1978-79 season, when the Eagles had 37 in a loss to Indiana. Morehead State scored 32 points in a 1995 loss to Kentucky.

Gary Forbes had 21 points, J.R. Reynolds added 18 and No. 19 Virginia used a late 20-10 run to beat Furman 79-67 on Wednesday night.

No. 20 Rutgers 68, Princeton 46
No one really seems to know what the "C" stands for in C. Vivian Stringer's name, but she jokes that it stands for "Coach."

No. 17 Boston College Flogs Fordham 82-40
Jessalyn Deveny scored 18 points, and 17th-ranked Boston College used three big first-half runs to coast to an 82-40 victory over Fordham on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma St. Tops Syracuse, 74-60
Stephen Graham scored 16 points, including two three-point plays in the final 4 1/2 minutes, and No. 5 Oklahoma State beat No. 4 Syracuse 74-60 on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic.

No. 25 Gonzaga Edges Washington St. 54-52
Ronny Turiaf scored 17 points and Adam Morrison added 12 as No. 25 Gonzaga held off Washington State 54-52 on Tuesday night.

No. 16 Washington 98, San Diego St. 69
Hot shooting and relentless play on the boards helped 16th-ranked Washington match its best start in eight years.

No. 14 Texas 86, North Texas 57
Brad Buckman didn't block every shot North Texas put up Tuesday night. It just seemed that way.
