FA Cup Round 1Q

Bishop Auckland 1 : Workington 2

17 September, 2004

Team: Riches (Clementson 40mins), Neil, Morgan, Dixon (Maddison 56mins), West, Foster, Moore, Brackstone (Rowe 73mins), Hope, Salvin, Irvine

Bishops crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle to UniBond Premier leaders Workington despite a late 10 men fight back.

Riches returned in goal and Brian Rowe was relegated to the bench as Bishops kicked off downhill in the first half.  The pattern was similar to the recent home league game and again Workington took the lead late in the first half after Bishops had been denied a clear penalty.  The goal came on 33 minutes when a cross / shot was tapped home by a Workington forward stood on the goal line.

Riches was replaced by Clementson in goal with five minutes of the half remaining.

The game looked beyond Bishops as Workington doubled their lead on 48 minutes.  Neil inadvertently headed back to an unmarked Workington player who scuffed the ball home under Clementson's body.

Workington seemed content to run the clock down after that and Bishops looked increasingly unlikely to break through.   Maddison came on for Dixon on 56 minutes to bolster the attack and Moore almost gave Bishops hope when he shot low only to see his shot hacked off the line by a defender.

Maddison was injured on 82 minutes leaving Bishops down to ten men for the remainder of the game.  Despite the short numbers Bishops rallied in the closing minutes with Hope going close from an overhead kick after Workington's 'keeper Collin fumbled the ball.

Moore gave Bishops hope when he slotted the ball home low between Collin's legs on 89 minutes and two wonderful opportunities were missed in injury time.  First Moore raced down the right but his cross was headed to safety then Salvin found himself in space but he failed to release the ball and the chance was lost.
