Alon Weinberg

Your Green Candidate in St. Johns

Born in West Kildonan, Alon was raised in a family with deep roots in the North End going back to the immigration of his grandparents in the 1950s and the founding of their business, the Miracle Bakery. Alon's connection to the community extends to his work in the North End for the Shalom Residences and the campaign as volunteer board member to keep the old Jewish Public Library open.

He has worked as a teacher's assistant and private tutor and most recently with the Wilderness Committee, educating the public on the undeveloped tract of boreal forest in Manitoba's East Shore, the largest undeveloped tract of its kind on earth, along with issues relating to the clearcut logging in 3 Manitoba provincial parks. He believes that education is the key to healthy social transformation.

Since receiving his BA in philosophy from the University of Winnipeg, he has studied spiritual traditions, languages and the environment, and has been a member of WWOOF - "Willing Workers on Organic Farms". He is also learning about holistic practices and wisdom as a way of preventative medicine. He was active in Hogwatch in its first year, and is a co-founder of the Friends of Grassy Narrows group and an active member of Ecological Males and Females in Action at the University of Winnipeg.
