Curious? Intrigued? Just what is Dystonia anyway?

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, which force certain parts of the body into abnormal  movements or postures. Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords. It is often excruciatingly painful.

Unfortunately, dystonia is frequently misdiagnosed as other ailments such as: stress, stiff neck, a psychogenic disorder, arthritis, dry eye, tic, tennis elbow, laryngitis, vocal abuse, or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinson's Disease and Tremor, affecting more than 300,000 people in North America. Dystonia does not discriminate, it can affect any age group, and all races and ethnic groups.
