To recognize its members for their outstanding accomplishments, the Computer Society sponsors an active and prestigious awards program.The awards honor technical achievements and service to the computer profession and to the society.

Technical Awards

Computer Entrepreneur Award
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
A sterling silver chalice is awarded to managers and leaders that are responsible for the growth of some segment of the computer industry, or technical managers whose entrepreneurial leadership built the computer industry. The efforts must have taken place over fifteen years earlier, and the industry effects must be generally and openly visible.

Computer Pioneer Award

A bronze medal is presented for significant contributions to concepts and developments in the electronic computer field which have clearly advanced the state of the art in computing. The contributions must have taken place fifteen or more years earlier.

Seymour Cray Computer Science and Engineering Award

Established in late 1997. A crystal memento, illuminated certificate, and $10,000 honorarium are awarded to recognize innovative contributions to high performance computing systems that best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray.

Eckert-Mauchly Award

A certificate and $5,000 are awarded jointly by the ACM and the Computer Society for outstanding contributions to the field of computer and digital systems architecture.

Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award

Established in 1992 in memory of Sidney Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development and application of high performance computers for the solution of large computational problems. A certificate and $2000 are awarded for outstanding contributions in the application of high performance computers using innovative approaches. Nomination are solicited from the conference committee
s of SC.

Harry H. Goode Memorial Award

A bronze medal and $2000 are awarded by the Computer Society on the basis of achievements in the information processing field which are considered either a single contribution of theory, design, or technique of outstanding significance, or the accumulation of important contributions on theory or practice over an extended time period, the total of which represent an outstanding contribution.

Tsutomu Kanai Award
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
Established in 1995 for recognition of major contributions to state-of-the-art distributed computing systems and their applications. A certificate, crystal memento, and $10,000 honorarium are presented. In addition, the recipient will receive a travel grant to attend two technical conferences.

Hans Karlsson Award for Leadership and Achievement Through Collaboration
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
Established in 1992 in memory of Hans Karlsson, chairman and father of the IEEE 1301 family of standards. A plaque is presented in recognition of outstanding skills and dedication to diplomacy, team facilitation and joint achievement in areas of the computer industry where individual aspirations, corporate, and organizational rivalry could otherwise be counter to the common good. Nominations will be solicited from the Computer Society Standards committees.

Harlan D. Mills Award

Established in Harlan D. Mill's name to recognize researchers and practitioners who have demonstrated long-standing, sustained, and meaningful contributions to the theory and practice of the information sciences, focusing on contributions to the practice of software engineering through the application of sound theory. This technical award was first given in 1999. The award consists of a $3000 honorarium, museum-quality memento, and a possible invited talk during the week of the annual International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), co-sponsored by IEEE Computer Society Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE).

Software Process Achievement Award

A plaque and $1,500 honorarium is awarded to software professionals or teams responsible for an improvement to their organization's software process.

Technical Achievement Award

A certificate is presented for outstanding and innovative contributions to the fields of computer and information science and engineering or computer technology, usually within the past ten, and not more than fifteen years.

W. Wallace-McDowell Award
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
A bronze medal and $2000 honorarium are presented for outstanding recent theoretical, design, educational, practical, or other similar innovative contributions that fall within the scope of Computer Society interest.

Conference Contribution Award

A plaque is awarded for outstanding research contributions to a society sponsored or co-sponsered conference for at least ten years

Distinguished Service Award

A certificate is awarded for long and distinguished service to the Computer Society at a level of dedication and achievement rarely demonstrated.

Meritorious Service Award

A certificate presented for meritorious and significant service to any Society-sponsored activity. Qualification is enhanced by the level and number of contributions, excellence, dedication and tenure of service.

Outstanding Contribution Award

A certificate awarded for an achievement of major value and significance to the Computer Society. The achievement should be a specific, concisely characterized accomplishment, as opposed to a collection of different efforts.

Distinguished Service in a Pre-College Environment Award

A plaque is awarded for furthering the professional and technical goals of the IEEE Computer Society in a pre-college environment.

Continuing Service Award

A certificate is awarded for ongoing credible service to any society activity or program after three years of continuous service.

Named Service Awards

Harry Hayman Distinguished Service Award

A
plaque and $5,000 honorarium are presented for long and distinguished service of an exemplary nature in the performance of duties over and above those called for as a regular employee of the Society. This is the highest service award given to an active member of the Computer Society staff.

Richard E. Merwin Distinguished Service Award

The highest level service award of the Computer Society. A bronze medal and $
5000 are given for outstanding service to the profession at large, including significant service to the Computer Society or its predecessor organizations.


Education Awards

Taylor L. Booth Education Award
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
A bronze medal and $5000 honorarium are awarded for an outstanding record in computer science and engineering education. The individual must meet two or more of the following criteria in the computer science and engineering field:

  • Achieving recognition as a teacher or renown
  • Writing an influential text
  • Leading, inspiring or providing significant education content during the creation of a curriculum in the field
  • Inspiring others to a career in computer science and engineering education

Computer Science & Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award
Past Recipients | Nomination Form
(Early deadline 31 July 2004)
A plaque, certificate and a stipend of $2,000 is awarded to recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education through both teaching and service and for helping to maintain interest, increase the visibility of the society, and make a statement about the importance with which we view undergraduate education.
