History of ComputingRecognizing that modern achievements are no greater than the foundations upon which they were built, the IEEE Computer Society celebrates computing history in a number of ways. Our primary means of showcasing events in computing history is IEEE Annals of the History of Computing. Since 1979, Annals has sought to raise important questions, highlight major events and influences that shaped the industry, and record the ideas and impressions of computer innovators. To receive the quarterly IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, print and mail this flyer with the latest subscription rates.
Timeline of Computing HistoryIn 1996, the IEEE Computer Society celebrated a landmark year. Not only did that year mark the 50th anniversary of the public revelation of the ENIAC, it was also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Large Scale Computing Subcommittee of the AIEE, the group that later became the IEEE Computer Society. To recognize the significant events that took place during those 50 years, IEEE Computer Society staff assembled a timeline of occasions in computing history. (A condensed version of the timeline is available in PDF.) Because the IEEE Computer Society's history and achievements are intertwined with those of this world-altering field, we have also assembled a history of the Computer Society. A month by month calendar from Computer magazine (1996) provides a retrospective of computing history events.
