Bishop Auckland 2 : Burscough 1 aet

25 January, 2004

Report from John Cowey - 25 January, 2004

Team:  Riches, Rowe, Mason, Foster, West,  Hope, Moore, Robson, Maddison (Scaife 90mins), Salvin (Shingleton 119mins), Irvine (Ross 110mins)

Bishops edged an open game in extra time to book their place in the League Cup semi final and dump out their third Premier Division opponents in this competition.

Maddison returned to the attack and Scaife started on the bench after serving his three match suspension.  The game began in bright sunshine on a crisp winter day.

Pre Match: Bishops prepare to do battle

Bishops made most of the running in the opening minutes and came close to opening the scoring when Chris Moore tormented the opposing full back before firing a low cross into the box but outside the reach of the blue forwards.

1st Half:  Not far away with the 'keeper stranded

The deadlock was broken on 26 minutes when a corner was cleared as far as Robson who drove the ball back through the area and into the net off the underside of the bar.

Burscough put on the pressure as the half wore on, and Mark Foster was forced to clear off the line and over the bar from a dangerous attack.  The equaliser came in the sixth minute of injury time when some sloppy defending let in Martindale to score from close range.

1st Half:  Hope drives the ball in

Burscough started strongly in the second half and had the Two Blues under considerable pressure as the half progressed.  A Bishops winner looked unlikely, but almost came in the final minutes when Robson struck a beautiful volley from 25 yards which was headed clear by a brave defender on the line.

Immediately Burscough broke, and defeat looked inevitable when the Burscough forward rounded Riches.  Fortunately hesitation before the shot was released allowed Foster to recover and make his second goal line clearance of the afternoon.

1st Half:  Moore torments Burscough's No.3 (again)

Scaife replaced Maddison at full time and Bishops dominated the first period of extra time.  Salvin saw a shot palmed wide.  Hope side-footed wide when in space 12 yards out.  Moore beat five men but saw a shot deflected to safety. Then Irvine blasted a shot against the top of the post.

But still they pressed, and the goal came on 104 minutes when Scaife floated in a cross which looped over the 'keeper to Irvine who slotted home a low shot from six yards.

1st Half:  Maddison fights for possession

Both signs looked weary in the second period of extra time.  Two hours playing on a heavy pitch had take its toll, but Bishops fought for every ball and looked safe until the final minute when Burscough broke free.  A cross shot evaded Riches leaving a colleague to tap in from around three yards.  Inexplicably, the simplest chance of the game was missed and the ball cleared the bar to hoots of laughter and delight from the Bishops supporters.

The game was won.
