Human Rights Commission Library

Domestically and internationally, there is an ever greater emphasis on human rights education. Human rights education is also one of the core functions of the Human Rights Commission.

Comprehensive access to information is widely recognised as playing a significant role in human rights education. It is the function of libraries and documentation centres to provide greater access to information for the broadest client-base they can reach. The Commission library plays just such a role as New Zealand's largest single collection of human rights information.

Library services

The Commission's library is there to assist Commission staff in their work. However, as the Commission believes that it is important for all people to have access to human rights information, it is also there for other human rights practitioners, organisations and the general public.

The library is located in Auckland and is open as a reference library for the public Monday to Friday, 9.00-5.00. Working space, computer access and photocopying facilities are available.

Although the Commission library functions mainly as a reference library, it is involved in a number of reciprocal information sharing programmes with other libraries and/or organizations. It is also a member of the New Zealand Interloan system. This ensures that borrowing of human rights information by the general public is possible - via the appropriate systems - even if they are not physically able to visit the library. Please note that the Interloan system only includes New Zealand libraries.

Please phone our librarian on 09 375 8637 or email library@hrc.co.nz if you'd like further information.

The Commission maintains an extensive database of all the material held in the library. If you want to find out what information the library might have in your area of interest, search our database. Please note that the library database should be largely viewed as a reference tool. This is because the the library is only able to loan material to the domestic public if they borrow through the Interloan system; the library is not able to loan material internationally at all. If you are interested in material you find in the library database please contact our librarian for information on how best to obtain it.
