Welcome to slipgate.org...

A number of things have happened. In no particular order: The new MTA is postfix (from sendmail). The new imap/pop3 server is dovecot (from uw-imap4). The new system mail format is now maildir, changed from mbox. Users take note, for those of you that actually use slipgate for their mail and are wondering why all their old mail is no-longer seemingly there where it once was, have faith that it is still there and make use of the mb2md tool to convert any important messages.

As well, I have written up a basic (so far) mutt configuration to work with the maildir format. Squirrelmail has also been tweaked to work with the new imap server, and everything is working much more in harmony. The idea is that whether you're using mutt, or squirrelmail, or some local email client on your systems, all your mail will be accessable no matter which you choose. Of course if you would rather use pop3, all your mail will be local and mutt and squirrelmail won't be consistant, but thats your decision.

Oh, one more item worth discussion, I upgraded slipgate's ram with an additional 256MB stick. This gives the server a total of roughly 320MB RAM, which should in turn prevent the unfortunate swap thrashing that was occuring with only 64MB.

Pure-FTPd is now the system ftpd.

Yesterday I upgraded slipgate's FreeBSD version from 5.3-RELEASE to 5.4-STABLE.

I changed out the 2.5 gig drive that I was using for swap for a 700MB one. The only reason for this is that the 2.5 gig drive seemed to be failing and causing FreeBSD to freak out when its swap space would suddenly do weird things. Understandable I suppose. I also changed out the realtek nic for a D-Link DFE530TX because the realtek kept having problems where I'd have to bring the interface down and then back up locally before it would continue network operation. It was a remote nightmare waiting to happen. Oh, and this was a week ago, I just forgot to post about it until now.

Slipgate now has an Arco DupliDisk3 adaptor in conjunction with 2x 160GB 7200rpm Samsung IDE drives. Everything is configured and installed, though I was having issues with FreeBSD not being able to correctly use the controller with UDMA. Thus, UDMA is disabled for now. I don't see that as an earth shattering problem, I'll look into solutions later, and perhaps knock it into action again. For now, everything is performing fine, and I have a strip of pretty green LEDs to look at to assure me that everything is fine with the disks.

Hardware change again. Slipgate now runs on a Pentium III 600mhz system built by..me. Also changed is the operating system, which is now FreeBSD 5.3. Default shell is still /bin/sh. Due to failing, the harddrive is now a new 160GB Samsung (upgrade from the old 80GB Samsung). RAID1 is coming. PLEASE email me in regards to resetting your password!

Hardware change. Slipgate now runs on a Pentium Pro 200 system built by DEC. Default shell is now /bin/sh, not bash. gnuls is no longer installed, but I have created a nicer /etc/profile to accommodate a nice prompt and helpful ls options.
