A Web Site Dedicated to Counteracting
the Excessive Influence of the
Philosophical Gourmet Report

  • General Remarks on the Report
This section contains a short discussion of reasons one might have for dissatisfaction with the Philosophical Gourmet Report and, in particular, for concern about its influence upon students' decisions about which graduate schools they should apply to or attend.
  • An Open Letter Expressing Concern about the Report's Influence
This section reproduces an open letter to PGR's author/editor, expressing concern about its influence. A list of signatories follows the letter. If you'd like to add your name (faculty only please), let me know, and I'll add you.
  • Comments on the Philosophical Gourmet Report
This section contains some comments about PGR sent to me by philosphers from around the United States, expressing their own individual views about its virtues and vices. If you would like to add your own voice, let me know.
  • Problems with the Philosophical Gourmet Report
This section contains a detailed discussion of problems with the Philosophical Gourmet Report, focusing on the quality of the advice it explicitly and implicitly offers students who are trying to decide where they should apply and then (if they should be so fortunate), which program to attend.
  • Replies and Discussions
Much of my purpose in beginning this effort was to initiate a discussion, within the profession, of the Philosophical Gourmet Report and the effects it is having on students, faculty, departments, and the profession. This section contains links to some responses to the Open Letter and my responses to them.
  • How to Choose a Graduate Program: Some Hints
If not the Gourmet, then what exactly? How should one go about choosing a graduate program? There is, of course, no easy answer to that question, and a competing system of rankings is certainly not the answer. But it would be unfortunate indeed if there were nothing to be said, so, in an effort to be helpful, this section of the site contains a few remarks designed to help students ask the right questions. (Basically, this is the speech that I give to my own students.)
  • How to Help
This section contains information about how you can help counteract the influence of the Philosophical Gourmet Report. In short: Link to this site! Get your friends to link to this site. Get your department to link to this site.
  • Links
This section of the site contains links to sites that provide information that may be helpful to students considering applying for graduate study in philosophy.
