EXPLOSIVES USED TO BLOW UP WHALE IN SOUTH AFRICA

In a bizarre incident, a stranded humpback whale was blown up with explosives to end its misery of the coast of the Republic of South Africa.
The ten-metre-long humpback whale had been lying stranded in the mouth of the river Staden since last Sunday. Despite the efforts of dozens of volunteers, it was impossible to move the whale for it to swim back out to sea.
With the low tide, the whale became more exposed to the sun and was showing signs of extreme exhaustion and organic failure. The coastguard advised the police to practice euthanasia to put the mammal out of its misery. The technique was similar to controlled implosions to destroy buildings.
Explosives were strapped to the animal▓s carcass and it was blown apart. Marine researcher Wendy Kant said ⌠It was a horrible thing to see but in the end it was the most humane way of acting■.
