About Us

In January 1888, 33 people came together in Washington, D.C. They were a disparate group that included a teacher, lawyer, topographer, banker, military officer, and naturalist.

They all had one quality in common: curiosity about the world and everything in it. They organized the National Geographic Society and stated its purpose: the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.

For more than 116 years the National Geographic Society has supported and chronicled the achievements of some of the world's most accomplished explorers. In 1996 the Society organized its grantmaking, scientific, and educational programs under one banner, Mission Programs.

Mission Programs undertakes expeditions and scientific investigations; encourages geography education for young people; promotes natural, historical, and cultural conservation; and inspires the public through vibrant exhibits and live events.

One of the Society's differentiating traits is its ability not only to mount these programs but also to share their results with a global audience through National Geographic media. This translates into a remarkable capacity to effect positive change for the world by simply providing objective, accessible information.

Each year Mission Programs receives generous philanthropic support. Increased giving from individuals and organizations is allowing us to expand our efforts.

On this Web site you can learn more about all of Mission Programs' major activities: research and exploration, conservation, education, cultures, and public programs. You can also

We hope that you will consider joining the ranks of National Geographic Society donors—people just like you, with an insatiable curiosity about the world and a vested interest in its future. Thank you.
