Running a website requires money, because there has to be a server set up which has to be maintained. Web hosting providers charge money for rack space and the traffic the server uses.
The project consumes manpower for answering user emails, maintainance of server software, checking and correcting new translation proposals, developing new and bugfixing old functions of dict.cc.
That's why this project needs to generate income. This can be done by showing "aggressive" ads like popup windows or shaped animations or by cluttering the pages with different kinds of graphical ads, increasing page loading times. This dictionary site wants to try it the user-friendly way: decent, removable (text-) ads and donations by the users of the service.
Contribute financially
Every amount of money is greatly appreciated. What you get in return is a link to your website and the listing of your name on this page. There are several ways to contribute financially:
PayPal (credit card, bank transfer)
If you have an existing PayPal account you just need to enter the sum you want to donate.
If you don't, please fill in a few fields more. PayPal accepts credit cards (around the world) and bank transferals (in some European countries). To be linked here, please enter your website url into the optional message field, this is the second step on the PayPal pages. PayPal - an eBay Company - does not transfer any credit card information to dict.cc or any other site.
Bank transfer
Within Austria please use the following account data:
Paul Hemetsberger, account number:
71.106.005, bank code:
60.000, purpose:
dict.cc donation
Within the European Union you need to add the following two codes to pay the same banking fees as you would pay within your home country:
BIC (SWIFT):
OPSKATWW, IBAN:
AT866000000071106005
These two codes are valid around the world, but I don't know about the fees outside the EU.
Please write a short email to
donations@dict.cc including your name (and/or company name) and web site address so I can add you to the list.
Snail mail (letter or postcard)
If you want to avoid banking fees or stay anonymous, you may also send a letter including a banknote wrapped in paper.
Foreign currencies (other than Euro) are also greatly appreciated, even if of low value (I'm
collecting foreign currency and postcards).
Please write to:
Paul Hemetsberger, Siebenbrunnengasse 84/28, 1050 Wien, Austria (Europe)
Contribute your time and knowledge
Maybe the best way to contribute to this project is to give your knowledge.
You can do so in several ways:
If you were looking for a translation, couldn't find it on dict.cc, but found it somewhere else:
Please
add it to dict.cc by using the form at the bottom of
this page.
Write a review about dict.cc on Alexa.com. The review link is located at the bottom of
this page.
If you're running a weblog, you may
write a few lines about dict.cc. Of course every website maintainer is very welcome to
place a link to
http://www.dict.cc!
You may even place a search field on your web site.
Feel free to use the following HTML code and change it to suit your needs:
<FORM ACTION="http://www.dict.cc/"><INPUT TYPE="TEXT" NAME="s"><INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" VALUE="Translate!"></FORM>
So you see: everyone can do something to keep the project alive. If you like the service you're using, feel free to pick any of the options listed above - your support will be greatly appreciated!
Kind regards,
Paul
