Davis, Astra*

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

ASTRA DAVIS Aged 81, passed away December 6, 2004, at her residence at the Sea View Hotel in Bal Harbour, Florida, where she and her devoted husband, Poncet, met 49 years ago. They had been married 47 years, and still resided at the Sea View Hotel. Mrs. Davis was a member of the Indian Creek Country Club, Bal Harbour Club, and Sailfish Club Palm Beach. Mrs. Davis traveled this country and the world in distinguished company. She had many friends from all walks of life, including United States Presidents, Vice Presidents, Senators, and Ambassadors, as well as the disadvantaged and needy. She took a genuine interest in people, particularly the less fortunate, and was quick to extend a helping hand. Her family was from Estonia, where she lived a few years. After coming to the United States at an early age, she lived in New Rochelle, New York, and attended NYU. She worked hard, and, in a man's world 50 years ago, became a Buyer for Lord & Taylor, and then a Senior Executive of two Millinery Manufacturers and Sales Companies. After first coming to Alabama, the Davises lived at the Muscle Shoals Hotel, and Mrs. Davis joined the First Presbyterian Church across the street. They built a home in Cliff Haven overlooking the Tennessee River. She loved her garden, flowers, plants and animals. Mrs. Davis supported a great many charities and schools. Amng them were: Auburn Veterinary School, Camillus House, Church By The Sea, Culver Black Horse Troop, Disabled American Veterans, First Presbyterian Church of Sheffield, Friends of the Sheffield Library, Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, Safe Place (for Abused Women), Salvation Army of Alabama and Florida, School for Field Studies, Seeing Eye Foundation in Morristown, NJ, Sheffield High School, Shoals Symphony, Stillman Institute, and the Tennessee Valley Art Association. Leaving no children, the Davises were extremely close, and preferred a private life. She had a very positive influence on her husband's business career. For example, after the demise of the Inner Tube business that severely affected the Alabama Rubber Plant, many wanted to shut it down. Mrs. Davis vigorously opposed that move, and insisted that, not only new products be developed, but a whole new plant be built, which has just been completed. Her determination saved many, many jobs. Donations in her Memory may be made to “Astra and Poncet Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund” at the following address: Auburn University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Attn: Diana Childers, 317 S. College St., Auburn, AL 36849-5182. Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at the Church By The Sea, 501 96th Street, Bal Harbour, Florida. There will also be a Memorial Service at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 E. 5th Street, Sheffield, Alabama. Immediately following the church service, she will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Oakwood Cemetery, 3523 Jackson Highway, Sheffield, Alabama.

DiMare, Joseph Richard*

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

JOSEPH RICHARD DiMARE 1938-2004 Dr. Joseph Richard DiMare was born October 31, 1938 in Belmont, Massachusetts, and died at age 66 at 3:48 a.m. on November 18, 2004 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois after complications following a heart valve repair. As a child, he lived in Belmont, MA with parents Joseph John and Josephine Marie Marino DiMare. The family moved to Miami, Florida when he was in second grade. They spent most of the year in Miami, but summered in Boston where he worked a few months each year for his father at DiMare Brother's tomato and produce packing company from the age of 12. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Miami and continued with undergraduate studies at Georgetown University, and Medical School at the University of Miami. Throughout his high school and college years, Joseph had a number of accomplishments in scholastics and athletics. He was president of the St. Pat's student body, a member of the National Honor Society and All-State in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to play baseball at Georgetown where he was captain of the team and made All-Conference three years in a row. While he always intended to go to medical school, thereby fulfilling a promise he made to his mother, he had a try-out with the Washington Senators professional baseball team mostly to meet his childhood hero Ted Williams who was scheduled to be there; unfortunately Ted Williams was unable to attend as a result of catching the flu. As a child, one of his greatest memories was going to batting practice and games in Fenway Park cheering for his beloved Boston Red Sox. He was thrilled to have seen them win the 2004 World Series. Joseph served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Seymour Johnston Air Force Base in North Carolina. There he met his wife Beverly Horvath, daughter of Colonel Fredrick and Ruth Horvath. They were married in Goldsboro, North Carolina on April 20, 1968. After finishing his residency in Philadelphia, where he and Beverly had their first two children Joseph Frederick and Catherine, he received his fellowship in Nephrology in Miami. There, youngest son Mark Gregory was born. In 1971, Joseph moved his family to the Palm Beach area. He was the first kidney specialist in Palm Beach County to offer out of hospital hemo-dialysis, the first physician to offer training for in-home hemo-dialysis, and he set-up evening and night dialysis for patients who needed to work so that they could continue to work. His selflessness, personal sacrifice and commitment to his patients were evident throughout his career. In 1973, he bought his first dialysis machine to begin out of hospital dialysis. Within four months, he had to purchase six more machines to support the patients who would otherwise have to travel great distances to receive care for this deadly disease he dedicated his life toward treating. As a physician during the first 6 years of his practice, he was on call virtually twenty-four hours a day before he was joined by partner Dr. Louis Borucki who remained his partner for the next 27 years until Dr. DiMare's retirement. Their partnership was further enriched by the addition of Dr. James Mullen and Dr. David Amrose. Dr. DiMare practiced medicine in Palm Beach County treating patients at five hospitals, three dialysis centers, and two office locations over the next 33 years. Joseph retired from practicing medicine in January of 2004. He spent the next ten months enjoying spending time with his family and playing golf. On November 4th, he elected to undergo heart valve repair to improve a common condition called mitral valve prolapse in order to improve his quality of life. After complications, he died two weeks later. He is survived by: wife Beverly, sons Joseph Frederick (and wife Elizabeth) and Mark Gregory of North Palm Beach, FL; daughter Catherine (and husband Dr. Nirain) D'Souza of Peoria, IL, and their two daughters Kiran and Anika; adopted daughters Serena (and husband Dan) Mancini of Johnston, RI, and their son Daniel; Lisa Michael of Boulder, CO; two brothers, James (and Sheila) DiMare of Ocala, FL, Richard (and Susan) DiMare of Sparks, Nev.; sister, Linda DiMare Welton of Atlanta; Beverly's parents Fred & Ruth Horvath of Tequesta, FL; brother-in-law Dr. Fred (and Julie) Horvath of Morton, IL; sister-in-law Roxanne (and Peter) Rumple of St. Augustine, FL; and sister-in-law Arwen Joss (and husband Eon and daughter Jessi) of West Palm Beach, FL. Joseph was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in North Palm Beach where services will be on the morning of Saturday December 18th at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at OSF Saint Francis in Peoria, IL or St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in North Palm Beach, FL.
