About the GRO Indexes
Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages for England and Wales began on 1 July 1837. These records are held at the Family Records Centre, London. (Previously they were held at St Catherine’s House). The indexes to these records have been microfiched, and the NZSG has purchased fiche for the period 1 July 1837 to 31 December 1992.

Please note that the index covers only England and Wales, not other parts of the UK. Each year is divided into 4 quarters ending 31 March, 30 June, 30 September, and 31 December. Indexing is based on the date of registration, not the date of the actual event.

This is an index only and does not contain full details from the certificates. Once you have received your reply you will have the information you need to send for a copy of actual birth, death or marriage certificates. You can do this using the NZSG’s General Register Office Certificates Service.

What information can I obtain?
You will receive a printout showing:
  • Year and quarter that the event was registered (not the specific date)
  • Surname, Forenames, Registration District, Volume and Page Number of the entry in the Register.

The microfiche have been filmed from actual indexes and some of the printouts are very difficult to read.

If you are searching for a marriage, it is preferable to ask for a printout for both the bride and the groom, so that you can be sure that the details you supply when requesting a certificate are correct.

You request a search for an event (birth, death or marriage) for individuals. There is a limit on the number of requests you can make at any one time. You may choose one of the following alternatives:

  • Request a search for three events where you specify a year and name for each.
  • Request a search of up to three years for a single event and name.
