IMDb Movie of the Day
Former model Tamara Dobson stepped off the runaway long enough to create one of the most name-checked female characters of the 1970s. Effortlessly, her beauty, icy delivery and penchant for silk and furs made Cleopatra Jones into a much better movie than it intended to be. As a special government agent, Cleopatra first supervises the destruction of a Turkish poppy field before heading back to Los Angeles to deal with some shady related business. Her mission involves a raid on a drug rehab facility, the po-lice and Shelley Winters, who, as a lesbian drug trafficker named Mommy, helps Cleopatra achieve a certain mythical status. With her J.J. Johnson-penned theme song (he also wrote movie theme "Across 110th Street", later used fabulously in Jackie Brown) emanating from her black Corvette, Cleopatra crimebusts with style and detached cool. Though this is no Coffy, Dobson's on Pam Grier's level; her karate skills alone are enough to make any man crumble, but it's her 6'2" frame that turns them into dust. Small roles and a string of cameos help tie Cleopatra together, including Antonio Fargas, ex-footballer Bernie Casey and Esther Rolle -- even Don Cornelius makes an appearance. Naturally, there's no question that Cleopatra will emerge victorious, the point is to marvel at her while she's all embattled. So popular she became that less than two years later she'd jet off to Hong Kong for a sequel, Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold. - Arno Kazarian
