Greek Database Community

Databases are a field where there is notable Greek presence. The person who paved the way for the younger generations is Dennis Tsichritzis. Dennis was one of the very few persons (perhaps the only one), who presented 8 papers in the first 11 VLDB conferences (1975-1985). At the same time (late 70s, early 80s), other Greeks have published important results.  Since then, it is certain that in every annual major conference many important contributions are presented by Greeks. According to our findings, the second generation is now leading the race. However, a third generation of young promising scientists starts an international career (and everybody wishes that they will continue the "glorious" greek tradition in the field). The aim of this page is to:

show how large the greek database community is, and provide an easy way for communication ,
and
highlight the most paper productive colleagues (in alhpabetic order).

For this purpose, we have examined the table-of-contents of the major database conference and journals, and extracted every Greek name, even though a specific person may not work mainly in databases. As major conferences and journals we consider the following ones:

SIGMOD (until 2002 included)
VLDB (until 2002 included)
PODS (until 2002 included)
ICDE (until 2002 included)
ACM TODS (until Vol.26, No.4 included)
IEEE TKDE (until Vol.14, No.3 included)
VLDB Journal (until Vol.10, No.4 included)
Information Systems (until Vol.27, No.6 included)

It is also intersting to note that among the 120 most frequently cited database publications (according to DBLB), there are 6 papers authored or co-authored by a Greek (in total, 8 Greek names). Note also that we have selected only conferences and journals devoted to databases specifically, and we have excluded other prestigious fora (e.g. CACM, JACM, TCS, TSE etc). This way, some important works may not be taken into account. Also, some database guys may have not published in these conferences and journals. Comments on errors and general suggestions on our selections are welcome.

This page will be updated every 6 months.
