Lady Elizabeth is a bridesmaid at the wedding of Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary.

Lady Elizabeth marries HRH The Duke of York, the King and Queen's second son, in Westminster Abbey.

Six months after the wedding, Lady Elizabeth and her husband, now the Duke and Duchess, visit Belgrade where they stood sponsor at the christening of the future King Peter II of Yugoslavia.

Her first child, Princess Elizabeth, is born in London.

King Edward VIII abdicates to marry Wallis Simpson, a divorced American. The Duke and Duchess assume the responsibilities of the throne.

The coronation of the Duke and Duchess as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

1939 May and June
The royal couple visit Canada, the first time a reigning monarch visits Canada.

1939 September
Soon after their return from the Canadian tour, the Second World War begins. The Queen and her daughters decline safe haven in North America, choosing to remain in England.

The King and Queen celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

King George VI dies at Sandringham.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother moves out of Buckingham Palace to Clarence House in St. James. She continues her public duties at home and abroad, making more than 40 official visits abroad, which includes a visit to Canada in 1989.

1956
The Queen Mother's horse, "Devon Loch," collapses just before the finish line in the Grand National. The jockey was Dick Francis, who became a best-selling mystery writer. A devoted horse-racing fan, she owns a string of thoroughbreds, with more than 400 winners.

1978
She is appointed Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle.

Lady Diana Spencer, granddaughter of the Queen Mother's friend Lady Fermoy, marries Prince Charles. The couple left for St. Paul's Cathedral from the Queen Mother's home at Clarence House.

1990 August 4
The Queen Mother celebrates her 90th birthday. In her 90th year she undertakes 118 engagements throughout Britain.

1992
The Royals' annus horribulus as grandchildren Charles and Andrew separate from their wives Diana and Sarah. They divorced four years later.

1995 May 2
The Queen Mother opens the 50th anniversary VE (Victory in Europe) celebrations. She appears on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with her daughters, recreating the celebrations of May 2, 1945.

2000 August 4
The Queen Mother turns 100, waves to adoring fans around the world. The celebration began two weeks before her birthday.

2000 October 31:
The Queen Mum receives the Companion of the Order of Canada, Canada's highest honour. Governor General Adrienne Clarkson presents her with the medal at Clarence House.

2002 March 30:
The Queen Mother dies peacefully while asleep at home at the Royal Lodge.
