Sailor Moon Cards

Return to trading cards index

The Sailor Moon CCG was a nice card set. Unfortunately it's out of print, and not because it wasn't popular. "Sailor Moon" is still shown on TV, and has a big following. But ALL Sailor Moon products outside of Japan - not just cards - have disappeared, because of a dispute in Japan over who owns the foreign merchandising rights. This happened over a year ago, and has not been resolved. Even if it does get resolved, all contracts with the card designers and printers have been nullified, and it's unlikely this game will ever be revived.

There were 3 sets of Sailor Moon trading cards issued by Bandai / Cardzillion in 1995 to 1997. At the time these came out, the TV series was not yet widely shown in the USA. As a result, these sets had a low print run, and are not well known. The trading card magazine "Non-Sport Update" does not even list these.

4 more non-CCG Sailor Moon trading card sets were made by a Canadian company, Dart Flipcards. Again, the first 2 sets (issued 1997 and 1998) were not widely distributed, and the second set is not listed by "Non-Sport Update" which lists the "Archival" set in its place, indicating that it takes the place of "Series II", which is incorrect. It's possible that the "Archival" set is actually the 4th set, coming after "Series III". The latter 2 non-CCG sets included promo cards and additional foil cards for the CCG. There are also many promo cards from magazine inserts, etc.

When the CCG (Collectible Card Game) came out, there was a base set, which was printed in huge quantities, and has been somewhat devalued as a result. The second set , "Past and Future Expansion", is more valuable, since it came out just before the merchandising rights were withdrawn, so it had a small print run. Booster packs for the second set included reprints of cards from the first, with a different set symbol. This "second printing" set is harder to complete than the main "Past and Future" cards, but I'm not sure if many collectors know (or care) about this, as I haven't seen these listed on ebay. These are the cards I'm mainly interested in, as well as completing the other sets.

There are also many more Sailor Moon sets made and distributed in Japan.

Here is a link to someone with a nice looking site about Sailor Moon cards. I have made a trade with the author:
